Brandin Cooks was a fine fit, the Patriots couldn't re-sign him

Receiver Brandin Cooks was traded from the Patriots to the Rams the second straight offseason in which he has been traded

Brandin Cooks spent all of one season in New England before the Patriots made a decision to move on from the speedy wide receiver. Now we're hearing him and Bill Belichick are on bad terms. Acquiring a first- and sixth-rounder via Cooks and collecting a second-round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo could be the initial steps in a grander scheme to maintain a high level of success in New England. Instead, they find a cheaper replacement through the draft or a cheap, veteran contract.

But if Cooks wasn't a great fit, the Patriots certainly wouldn't have tried to discuss an extension, either. Last season Cooks had 65 receptions and 1,082 receiving yards, to go along with seven touchdowns.

Trading away Cooks leaves a pretty big hole at wide receiver.

As for Belichick dealing picks for Giants receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. - don't count on it. Belichick has imported several high-maintenance personalities, but nearly always at a bargain rate.

The #BrandinCooksSmearCampaign has already begun...

That gives the Patriots picks 23 and 31 in the first round. Selected No. 20 overall in 2014, Cooks spent the first three years of his career in New Orleans before being traded to New England last offseason. They got a solid year out of the player and then sold high, getting that first-round pick back in return. New England now has the ammo to pair one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the National Football League with the game's best quarterback. Even when they traded for Randy Moss in 2007, they bought low with a fourth-round pick.

And the Rams, of course, have perhaps the best player from that draft class, Aaron Donald, who needs to get paid, in addition to the best corner from the following year's draft, Marcus Peters, soon looking to cash in.

Wenger reacts to empty seats ahead of CSKA clash
However, Wenger believes that the fans always turn up for the big games and will be willing his team on to victory on Thursday. I couldn't have imagined a better start [providing three assists in his home debut against Everton].

Those three days at the end of April just got a lot more interesting for the Patriots.

But what if the Patriots don't fall in love with any of the top-tier QB prospects?

- The Patriots will not be trading for Odell Beckham Jr.

With the draft picks New England picked up in Tuesday's deal, it now holds four picks in the first two rounds later this month and four more picks in Rounds 3-7.

- They don't have as much insurance at wide receiver - yet.

Giants owner John Mara said he "absolutely" does not want to trade Beckham, but he left the door open for teams to call and inquire. For now, they don't have that insurance heading into the 2018 season. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports this deal essentially rules out a Gronkowski trade, and that the Pats will move forward with Gronk, Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan as the primary weapons for Tom Brady.
