Donald Trump declares DACA 'dead,' urges US Congress to act on border

"DACA recipients have been treated extremely badly by the Democrats", Trump said at a bill signing last week at the White House.

President Donald Trump is calling for new border wall and immigration legislation, tweeting that moving to the "nuclear option" in the Senate is only way to muscle such a measure through Congress.

In his first of the immigration-related tweets, Trump wrote, "Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release".

At a news conference announcing the signing of the $1.3 trillion spending bill in which Trump didn't get what he had wanted on immigration, the president tried to convince the almost 8 in 10 Latinos who voted against him in the 2016 election that his party supports them more than anyone else. "NO MORE DACA DEAL!" he wrote. He added, "Act now, Congress, our country is being stolen".

The Daca -Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals- is a scheme providing protected status to those who entered the U.S. illegally as children.

"Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large "Caravans" of people enter their country", he said in another tweet.

"They (Mexico) must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws", he said.

Trump's first tweet on Monday appeared to be responding to a news report on Fox News about a "caravan" of Central American migrants traveling to the United States with an organization called "Pueblos Sin Frontiers". They flow right through Mexico. "The theory is that a lot of these people who are still trying to cross the border do not know that DACA is closed, and that smugglers are taking advantage of them by telling them that they can participate in DACA". Declaring that Mexico was doing "very little, if nothing" to stop narcotics and illegal immigrants from flowing across the border.

Under current immigration policies, asylum seekers that prove a "credible fear" of returning home may be released while they await adjudication if they don't present a security or flight risk. "It can't happen that way anymore".

OUR VIEWPOINT: Citizenship question proper, but unnecessary
Usually, the Census Bureau instead asks neighbors about the household in order to get as much accurate information as possible. It's too late to think that the Trump administration will do the right thing and voluntarily drop the citizenship question.

Lawmakers were unable to strike a bargain, with the White House insisting any deal also include new restrictions on legal immigration as well as funding for the president's border wall.

Alex Mensing of Pueblos Sin Fronteras told ABC News that numerous caravan travelers are fleeing violence and that they are hoping to reach USA ports of entry in Arizona, California, or New Mexico where they will claim asylum and likely be detained. New DACA applications are not being accepted. "I love the Dreamers".

As we've noted before, there have been Democratic and bipartisan efforts to find a solution for Dreamers. Trump included a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers in his "Four Pillars" plan for immigration reform.

It only applies to those who have lived in the US since 2007, meaning that no one crossing the border now would be eligible.

But in tweets on Sunday he indicated he was done negotiating and wanted Congress to resolve the issue with legislation.

"So amusing to watch Fake News Networks, among the most dishonest groups of people I have ever dealt with, criticize Sinclair Broadcasting for being biased".

Next, he was on to talk about Amazon and the Post Office, claiming that the Post Office loses "a fortune" with Amazon.

Trump sent his tweets on the fourth and final day of his vacation in Palm Beach, where he has been staying at his private Mar-a-Lago resort with a small coterie of aides. USA and worldwide law protect asylum-seekers' right to apply for protections from persecution. But much of that money can only be used to fix existing segments, not build new sections.
