1146 rebels, families evacuate Douma district in Syria's Eastern Ghouta

Syrian official news agency SANA shows Syrian government forces overseeing the evacuation of Army of Islam fighters and their families from the besieged town of Douma just east of Damascus Syria Monday

A Russian-brokered deal had been reported on Sunday for fighters with Jaish al Islam (or Army of Islam), the largest rebel group still in Ghouta, to leave the enclave's main town of Douma.

Iyad Abdelaziz was quoted as saying by The Associated Press news agency on Sunday that there was no agreement reached to have the Jaish al-Islam rebel group leave Douma for north Syria and hand over the town to government forces.

The fighters were expected to head to Jarablus, a town in northern Syria shared by rebels and Turkish forces.

The government has been trying to reclaim the area after seven years of fighting.

At least 1,644 civilians, including 344 children, have been killed in the offensive that began on February 18 and reduced some neighborhoods to rubble, according to SOHR, which monitors the seven-year Syrian war through activists on the ground. Thousands of rebels, their families and other civilians have already departed other parts of eastern Ghouta for Idlib province, another insurgent-held area of northern Syria.

"They will all have to agree to the settlement in the end", the source said.

According to the United Kingdom-based monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, some 1,300 people, including fighters, their families and activists have also agreed to leave Douma, the AP said.

Rami Abdurrahman, the Observatory's director, said some factions within the Army of Islam oppose evacuating and effectively surrendering Douma to the government of President Bashar Assad.

Reports of the deal came as the last of the Faylaq al Rahman fighters were leaving Douma.

Syria's war has killed more than 350,000 people and displaced millions since starting in 2011 with a brutal repression of anti-regime protests.

An opposition official told the Saudi TV channel al-Arabiya that the Army of Islam was still engaged in talks with Russian Federation over the future of Douma.

It was the first organized evacuation of fighters from Douma, which has held out against government forces through 7 years of war.

Assad, who has military support from Iran and Russian Federation, now controls the bulk of Syria, though it may be hard for him to recover much more territory without risking a collision with other foreign powers that have forces inside the country.

On Sunday, the Syrian government-linked Central Military Media outlet said that once the evacuations are completed, a local council for Douma will be formed with the approval of the central government.

Douma has been besieged by government forces since 2013. He said US -led forces have increased their presence along the front line opposite the Turkey-led forces.

Turkey, with the support of allied Syrian opposition forces, is carrying out its own military operations in northern Syria, against a USA -allied Kurdish militia.
