Widow of Orlando nightclub gunman found not guilty of assisting in massacre

Pulse nightclub shooter's father was an FBI informant

The widow of the gunman who killed 49 people at a gay Orlando nightclub has been acquitted on charges of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and helping her husband in the 2016 attack.

Salman, 31, was found not guilty of aiding and abetting material support to a foreign terror organization and of obstruction of justice.

Salman was arrested in January 2017 for possible connections to her husband's June 2016 killing spree that killed 49 people and injured over 50 others at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

During the trial, prosecutors said Mateen, who was born in NY to Afghan immigrants, meant to attack Disney World's shopping and entertainment complex by hiding a gun in a stroller but became spooked by police and instead chose the gay club as his target. "Really that is the top most important thing the family wants you all to know, regardless of their happiness today at the verdict".

GREENE: OK. Again, the news this morning - Omar Mateen, he was the killer at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando in 2016.

Salman's attorneys argued that their client was not an accomplice but a simple-minded victim of her husband's infidelity and lies.

Hernandez was shot eight times when Omar Mateen opened fire on the crows. She had fled to the Bay Area from Florida after the shooting with her four-year-old son. She could have faced life in prison if convicted. Hours later, she walked out of Orange County jail, her head bowed as she held hands with defense lawyer Fritz Scheller.

Sarah C. Sweeney, an assistant USA attorney, declared that Salman thought Pulse was inside of Disney World, which they indeed had visited, so she was confused as to where Pulse "was".

"He said out of his mouth that he was doing this for a specific reason to avenge the people of his country", she said. They said she was abused by her husband, who cheated on her and concealed much of his life from her.

Charles Swift, defence attorney for Noor Salman paces outside the Orlando Federal Courthouse.

"It's a disgusting, random, senseless killing by a monster", Mr Swift said during closing arguments.

She said Salman's alleged confession was "clearly coerced" and added: "Cops screw up their own cases". "Her only sin has she married a monster", Moreno told jurors.

The government contended also that she knew Mateen had a sick fascination with violent jihadi videos and an affinity for Islamic State group websites, and that she gave him a "green light to commit terrorism".

"Nothing harmful would come out of her", a friend of Salman's who was identified only as Ms. Ahmed told jurors.

The revelation threatened to upend the case against Salman, but the judge denied the motion, saying it was not relevant.

Salman was interviewed by authorities for 11 hours, and her IQ score is 84, which makes her "below average in intelligence", Frumkin said.

Salman also advised Mateen to lie to his mother when she inquired about his whereabouts on the night of the shooting, prosecutors said. His intended target was the Disney Springs complex, prosecutors said.
