Arizona suspends Uber from autonomous testing after fatal crash

There could have been a software failure in the Uber vehicle, said Richard Murray, an engineering professor at California's Institute of Technology and the former head of Caltech's student self-driving team.

Uber has reached a settlement with the family of a woman killed by an Uber self-driving auto, reported Reuters.

It behooves Uber and other companies competing to ideal self-driving vehicles to learn from this death in Tempe. Meanwhile, Uber said that it had suspended testing of its self-driving cars in the cities of Tempe, Pittsburgh, San Francisco in the U.S. and Toronto in Canada.

As reported by the National Public Radio, Uber took immediate action after the incident and suspended all of the ongoing tests on its autonomous fleet in Arizona, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, and Toronto. The National Transportation Safety Board and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are working with Tempe police on that investigation.

Last week, Boston's government asked self-driving companies operating in the city to halt operations while safety procedures are reviewed.

As the WSJ reports, Gov. Ducey welcomed Uber and its self-driving vehicles into Arizona in 2016 with open arms after the company was kicked out of California as a way to look into improving public safety. Cruising at about 40 miles per hour in the far right lane, the Uber vehicle slams into Herzberg, killing her.

The self-driving vehicle community has long discussed the potential dangers of a "Hindenberg" for self-driving vehicles, Bryant Walker Smith, a University of SC law professor who studies self-driving cars, wrote in an email, referring to the hydrogen-filled airship's catastrophic explosion in 1937. "We believe it will continue to grow as we use our network and technology to transform the trucking industry". He then issued an executive order in August 2015 encouraging and allowing self-driving vehicle testing with no reporting requirements.

"There will be mistakes from vehicles, from systems, and a hundred or 500 or a thousand people could lose their lives in accidents like we've seen in Arizona", Lentz said Thursday at a Reuters Newsmakers event connected with the NY auto show. Three weeks ago, it started a free robot-taxi service for those employees to commute to and from work.
