North, South Korea to hold summit on April 27

Trump warns he may freeze SKorea trade deal for NKorea talks

The Korean Peninsula was divided in 1945 into a US -dominated south and Soviet-backed north, which became sovereign nations three years later.

The leaders of North and South Korea have agreed to meet next month. The agenda will primarily focus on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, Reuters reported. Do we have any idea what's to be discussed at the summit? "If there's a need, we made a decision to continue discussions on the summit agenda through follow-up high-level meetings in April", Cho said.

It is the first time for the two countries to hold a ministerial-level meeting since January, when they discussed the details of North Korea's participation in the Winter Olympics.

When asked whether such issues would shape the discussions between Kim and Moon, Cho said "Yes". North Korea's delegation was led by Ri Son Gwon, the head of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea. Others see the meeting as a path to possible denuclearization. Observers argue that the meeting elevates Kim's status as the legitimate leader of his nuclear-armed country and again makes China a major player in the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Tokyo is also reportedly in touch with Pyongyang, discussing a possible meeting between Kim and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The South's delegation arrived in Panmunjom after their vehicles crossed the heavily guarded border near the southern city of Paju.

The two previous inter-Korean summits, one in 2000 and another in 2007, were both held in Pyongyang.

South Korea has also said that its northern neighbor is ready for "denuclearization", the likely subject of both the April 27 and Trump meetings, though North Korea has previously pegged any such move to the removal of American troops from the South.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (C) was treated to a lavish welcome by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a secretive trip to Beijing as both sides seek to fix frayed ties ahead of landmark summits with Seoul and Washington.

Inter-Korean relations have been improving since the North chose to take part in the February 9-25 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics hosted in South Korea.

The two-day trip by Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi follows talks earlier this week between Kim Jong Un and Xi Jinping.

Pyongyang was hit with stiffer and stiffer sanctions as it continued testing its nuclear and ballistic missiles program.

The president did conclude the riff by thanking South Korea for their help in the talks. Yang met with presidential national security director Chung Eui-yong on Thursday and is to meet President Moon on Friday.

"The issue of denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula can be resolved if South Korea and the United States respond to our efforts with goodwill, create an atmosphere of peace and stability, while taking progressive and synchronous measures for the realisation of peace".

The confirmation of the summit is the outcome of weeks of hurried diplomacy, after a surprise thaw in relations on the Korean peninsula earlier this year.
