Cook added: "Privacy to us is a human right".

He goes on to admit that Apple could "make a ton of money if we monetized our customer". "We've elected not to do that", Cook said. In the last few weeks, as Facebook has been dealing with the fallout from fake news and now the data breach, Mark Zuckerberg and his team are in full firefighting mode. "I think the best regulation is no regulation, is self regulation", he said. "However, I think we're beyond that here", he said.

The technology giant refused to help the Federal Bureau of Investigation citing issues of data privacy and Cook called the request "chilling". Speaking at a recent tech conference in China over the weekend, Cook said the situation had become "dire" enough for regulators to take action. "I wouldn't be in this situation", he said.

Cook said Facebook's detailed personal information on its users should not exist in the first place. An onslaught of negative reactions ensued both from many people and the press due to deep-seated concerns Facebook doesn't care about digital privacy and rather profit off knowing as much about users - like their tendencies and traits - as possible.

It was given the information by an academic, who violated Facebook policies by sharing it.

"As such, Mr Zuckerberg has personally asked one of his deputies to make themselves available". "And we don't subscribe to the view that you have to let everybody in that wants to or if you don't, you don't believe in free speech".

For Facebook, Playboy's move is part of a backlash against the company, exemplified by the DeleteFacebook hashtag, that has grown in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica revelations. A 72-hour window to allow his statement to circulate wide enough to reach everybody.

On Friday, another Silicon Valley CEO, Elon Musk, deleted the Facebook pages of two of his companies, Tesla and SpaceX.
