Ex-Catalan minister surrenders to authorities in Scotland

Former Catalan minister to oppose extradition from Scotland

Clara Ponsati, Catalonia's former education chief and now a professor at the University of St Andrews, returned to Scotland in March after fleeing Spain with Mr Puigdemont.

Spanish authorities accuse her of "violent rebellion and misappropriation of public funds" over her role in Catalonia's independence referendum past year, but she refutes the claims.

She spoke briefly to confirm her name.

Following the hearing, it was announced that Ponsati would be released on bail, with a preliminary hearing on her case set for 12 April, and a full hearing to take place on 18 April.

"My legal team is instructed to robustly defend Clara as she views these charges as "political persecution" and a systematic attempt to crush the spirit of the Catalan people and their desire for freedom", her lawyer Aamer Anwar said in a statement.

The crowdfunder raised has more than £160,000 since this morning.

"Scotland has been a true friend to Catalonia in her darkest hours", the lawyer said.

On Monday, a group of protesters congregated outside the Spanish consulate in Edinburgh to demonstrate against the arrest warrant and the actions of the Spanish Government.

"She believes that the Catalan people tried to express a democratic right to decide their own destiny, and the only people that should be held responsible for the brutal violence was the Spanish police and the 6000 state security forces who attacked the Catalan people on behalf of the Spanish Government. She can not believe that she is being held responsible for the violence that took place on the day of the referendum", Anwar said outside court.

Mr Puigdemont fled Spain to avoid arrest five months ago after the Catalan parliament's declaration of independence.

The referendum took place under tense conditions on October 1, despite calls to Catalan leaders from the central Madrid government to call it off.

Clara Ponsati was made the subject of a European arrest warrant last week and gave herself up at a police station in Edinburgh on Wednesday.

"She wants to thank the many hundreds of thousands of ordinary people, especially in Scotland, who have shown her such love and support".

"Clara accepts her fate now lies in the hands of the Scottish justice system".

Wolfgang Schomburg, a German attorney representing Puigdemont, urged the Berlin German government to immediately make clear it would not under any circumstances approve his extradition.

Ponsati then returned to the University of St Andrews, northeast of Edinburgh, where she had formerly worked, and is a professor in the school of economics and finance.
