Box-Office Weekend: Black Panther Overthrown

Weekend Box Office: 'Pacific Rim 2' Cuts Down 'Black Panther'

As expected, Pacific Rim Uprising (NASDAQ:CMCSA) became the film to knock Black Panther (NYSE:DIS) from the top spot at the box office after five weeks, but Disney may be too busy counting money to get concerned.

It had to happen at some point, and Universal's Pacific Rim Uprising now holds the distinction of being the film that took over Black Panther's long-standing position as king of the weekend box office mountain, Paul Dergarabedian, a box office analyst at comScore, said.

Though it opened with a softer debut than Guillermo del Toro's predecessor Pacific Rim, which saw US$37 million in July 2013, the sequel was enough to dethrone Black Panther in the superhero tentpole's sixth weekend.

Pacific Rim Uprising sees Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil) directing a cast that includes John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Adria Arjona (True Detective), Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad), Cailee Spaeny (Counting to 1,000), Levi Meaden (Aftermath), Karan Brar (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Nick Tarabay (Spartacus), Zhang Jin (Ip Man 3), Mackenyu (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) and Jing Tian (Police Story: Lockdown), while Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman reprise their roles from the first film.

First direct flight from Australia to United Kingdom lands at London's Heathrow
Mena Rawlings, Britain's high commissioner to Australia, called the new service a "game changer". Four pilots are on board for the full journey, with at least one or two resting at any one time.

Black Panther played in 3,370 theaters this weekend, dropping 464 theaters from the previous weekend, falling just 37.5%, which is quite impressive in its sixth weekend, with a $4,394 per-screen average.

While the film rose to prominence, it was time for Wakanda's King T'Challa to surrender his box office crown. All told, the film's $150.5 million worldwide start also included #1 openings in Korea ($6.9 million); Russian Federation ($6.8 million); Mexico ($4.9 million); Indonesia ($3.7 million); Taiwan ($3.4 million); and Brazil ($1.6 million). I think the film will have a solid box office gross. That film faded fairly quickly ending up with only $101M domestically though it did make $309M internationally which may be the biggest reason why a sequel was greenlit. Having surpassed 2012's Marvel's The Avengers this past weekend, Black Panther also becomes the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time, and it only needs to gross $30 million more to surpass both Jurassic World and James Cameron's Titanic to become the third-highest grossing movie in North America. Tomb Raider rounded out the top five in its second weekend with $10.4 million for a troubled 10-day North American total of $41.7 million.

Unfortunately for Sherlock Gnomes, it doesn't seem likely to have the staying power that allowed The Star to quadruple its opening weekend. "A Wrinkle in Time", $8 million. 7. It isn't doing much better overseas with another $2.3 million and just $14.1 million total in just 31% of global territories. The R-rated ensemble comedy now stands at $60.8 million domestically and $94.8 million worldwide. The film dropped 56% during its second weekend and just crossed $40 million domestically. Midnight Sun opened in tenth place with $4.1 million and the new thriller Unsane finished in eleventh place with $2.8 million.
