Yankees say Greg Bird has inflammation in foot

New York Yankees Gary Sanchez

Just three days remain before the Yankees open their season in Toronto, and Greg Bird spent Monday visiting the surgeon who performed surgery on his right ankle last July.

Bird hit.190 overall a year ago but had eight homers and 25 RBIs in 29 games after returning from the disabled list in late August. Unfortunately, we have already seen Greg Bird temporarily ousted from the lineup for a foot issue, and just may make the opening day lineup in place of Adam Lind, but that's really the only major injury we've seen this preseason, and this is turning out to be one of the healthiest starts to a Yankee season in a long time.

Bird struggled this spring training, hitting just.154 in 52 at-bats with one homer, one double and four RBIs. Bird had been having a pedestrian spring before being scratched from Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox. Sure enough, an MRI and CT Scan on Sunday revealed right foot inflammation.

Bird flew back to NY to visit foot specialist Dr. Martin O'Malley on Monday, where the Yankees learned of the news that he would need surgery for a second consecutive season.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and China's economic czar, Vice Premier Liu He, were leading negotiations. Yu said China and the US have a valued partnership.

Bird missed all of 2016 after suffering a torn labrum in his shoulder and then was sidelined for much of last season after a fouling a ball off his right ankle at the end of spring training, which eventually led to surgery. After missing the entirety of the following season due to shoulder surgery, he resurfaced previous year to bat.190/.288/.422 in 48 games. He has slugged 20 homers in 94 career regular season games.

As of now, numberFire's models project Bird to hit.248 with 24 home runs, 62 RBI, and 56 runs scored in 467 plate appearances this season.

"He did say he's had some discomfort a little bit off and on", Cashman said. Now, the Bombers must turn to the duo of Neil Walker and Tyler Austin at the position.

"In the grand scheme of things", the manager said, "hopefully we do look back and it's a short-term bump in the road and we can get him back for good". Although an extended disabled list stint could have resulted in Miguel Andujar getting the call from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, such a decision would have only convoluted essential roster decisions upon Drury's return. "We feel Tyler Austin's ready for this opportunity".
