Linda Brown, of landmark Brown v. Board of Education case, dies

Brown third from left was one of six children involved in the civil rights lawsuit that challenged racial segregation in public schools

Linda's sister, Cheryl Brown Henderson, the founding president of Mission-based The Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research, confirmed the death.

In Linda Brown's case, the school her family wanted her to go to was both a better school and closer to her home than the one she had been attending.

Many schools had always been segregated as part of a wider system of discrimination known as the Jim Crow laws that persisted largely across the southern United States.

The 1954 U.S. Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education, involved several families, all trying to dismantle decades of federal education laws that condoned segregated schools for black and white students. When all of their applications were denied, the NAACP filed a lawsuit led by future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Supreme Court ruled it was impossible for segregated schools to be equal and thus they were unconstitutional.

"Does segregation of children in public schools exclusively on the basis of race, even though the physical facilities and other "tangible" factors may be equal, deprive the children of the minority group of equal educational opportunities?"

"64 years ago a young girl from Topeka brought a case that ended segregation in public schools in America", Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer tweeted Monday evening. He continued, "Linda Brown's life reminds us that sometimes the most unlikely people can have an incredible impact and that by serving our community we can truly change the world".

Brown was in the third grade when her namesake moment in history began.

His family released a statement in the early hours of Wednesday, March 14, confirming his death at his home in Cambridge.

She was also instrumental in one of the church day care programs, Campbell said.

Eventually Brown became an educational consultant and public speaker.

Schools were not the only segregated areas in the United States: there were also separate restaurants, bathrooms and water fountains for blacks and whites in parts of the country - something protesters held sit-ins to oppose as part of the civil rights movement. She broke it down in simple terms: "It was because her face was black. and she just couldn't go to school with the white races at that time".

"She stands as an example of how ordinary schoolchildren took center stage in transforming this country", Ifill said.

High schools and junior high schools were integrated, too, she said.

"I played with children that were Spanish-American".

"My father was like a lot of other black parents here in Topeka at that time".

In 1954, there were four African-American schools and 18 white schools in Topeka. "They were concerned not about the quality of education that their children were receiving, they were concerned about the amount - or distance, that the child had to go to receive an education", Brown said in the 1985 interview.

"I could tell something was wrong, and he came out and took me by the hand and we walked back home", she said of her father.
