Iowa family dies from gas inhalation

Weighing the possibility of a delayed or cancelled flight, the Sharps' extended family waited until Thursday to notify authorities that they hadn't heard from them.

Mexican authorities said Saturday (Mar. 24) the American family of four who were found dead in a tourist city died from inhalation of toxic gases.

The Attorney's General office said that forsenic doctors determined the family were dead for approximately 36 to 48 hours before they were found.

Quintana Roo's state attorney said the results mean any suggestion of foul play or suicide has been ruled out.

The family had been reported missing by their immediate family members early Friday morning to police in Creston, Iowa, which is located about 70 miles southwest of Des Moines.

In a statement, the U.S. State Department said: "We are able to confirm the deaths of four U.S. citizens in Akumal, Mexico". They left the United States for Cancun on March 14, then rented a auto and drove to Tulum, where they were renting a condo, according to Amy Sharp's sister, Renee Hoyt, who spoke with the Creston News Advertiser.

Then the family failed to attend a basketball game Wednesday night in Danville, Illinois - a game Weland said the family was looking forward to. They had made arrangements to meet another family at a waterpark that week but never showed up.

Amy's sister, Renee Hoyt, told Creston News Advertiser that the couple flew to Cancun, where they planned to rent a auto and drive to Tulum.

Paulina Chavez Alonzo, a spokeswoman for the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C., told NBC News that the government offered its "deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Sharps".

"Everything they did, they did as a family", Harris told CNN.

Relatives became anxious after Kevin Sharp, who owns a beer distribution company, didn't check in on his employees as he said he would.
