Illinois Payrolls Rise, Unemployment Dips in February

The unemployment rate last month rose to 3.7 percent, an increase of 0.07 percentage points from a month earlier, as firms closed temporary positions and people dissatisfied with their jobs quit ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said yesterday. Compared to a year ago, eight of the 11 major industry divisions experienced employment gains, while the remaining three experienced losses. The U.S. unemployment rate for February was 4.1%, the same level as in January and down from 4.7% in February 2017.

Over the year ended in February, the state added 48,700 jobs, with the greatest gains in manufacturing; leisure and hospitality; and government. In the past 12 months, the state has added 46,500 jobs.

The highest growth sectors for IN in January were construction and trade, transportation and utilities.

The county has added almost 28,000 jobs since February 2017, officials reported.

Job-creation in Wisconsin, however, has lagged the national average for more than six years.

During the 1999 period, the state's labor force participation rate was almost 73 percent.

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are: Shelby County at 3.1 percent, Cullman County at 3.6 percent, and Marshall, Madison and Blount Counties at 3.7 percent.

Year-over-year, EDD said Golden State payrolls swelled by 383,600, a gain of 2.3 percent. Over the year, Government lost 1,300 (-0.3 percent) jobs.

The state's jobless rate fell to 4.7 percent in February, down from 4.8 percent in January, after the addition of 15.200 more jobs. The lowest rate was 2.4 percent in Cumberland County and the highest was 5.2 percent in Washington County.
