Massive crowds at anti-gun rally in Florida

Students from the Parkland, Florida, high school where 17 students and staff were killed on February 14 will be among the 500,000 people organizers say could rally on Pennsylvania Avenue near the Capitol in Washington.

"If I could rewrite history I would change the day a senseless act of gun violence rocked my world", said Devontae Gliss, 15, from Bishop McNamara High School, whose mother was murdered in a drive-by shooting three years ago. They hope these marches will provide momentum for change ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

"If you listen real close, you can hear the people in power shaking", David Hogg, a survivor of last month's Florida high school shooting who has emerged as one of the student leaders of the movement, told the roaring crowd of demonstrators at the Washington rally.

With thousands of demonstrators gathering in Washington, organizers of the March for Our Lives rally say the country has reached a historic emotional tipping point on gun violence.

Protesters denounced the National Rifle Association and its allies and complained that they are scared of getting shot in school and exhausted of inaction by grown-ups after one mass shooting after another.

Later, artists including Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato will perform at the rally.

He disagrees with regulating high-capacity magazines and imposing universal background checks. They also called on young people to register to vote.

He was referring to Blaine Gaskill, the school resource officer who was instrumental in bringing a school shooting to a quick end at Great Mills High School in Maryland on Tuesday. "Stand with us or beware, the voters are coming", Cameron Kasky, a 17-year-old junior at the high school, told the crowd.

At a rally near New York's Central Park, a moment of silence was held for the Parkland victims. Then, a timer beeped. "Fight for your lives before it's someone else's job".

The Toronto rally got underway at 10 a.m. Saturday at Nathan Phillips Square, where demonstrators began the 1.5-kilometre march to Queen's Park calling for tighter gun laws in the states.

Since the bloodshed in Florida, students have tapped into a current of gun control sentiment that has been building for years - yet still faces a powerful counterpoint from the National Rifle Association and its supporters.

Trump is at his Florida home for the weekend. "We welcome Parkland, but these streets belong to D.C. students".

But in the end, the administration didn't push for any bold measures.

"Keeping our children safe is a top priority of the president's", said Walters, noting that on Friday the Justice Department proposed rule changes that would effectively ban "bump stock" devices that let semi-automatic weapons fire like a machine gun.

On Thursday evening, NRA TV posted a clip on its YouTube channel entitled "A march for their lies" where the host addressed the Parkland students and said that if their friends hadn't died, "no one would know your names".

Similar rallies were being held in cities across America to march for gun control and ignite political activism among teenagers.

A poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows that 69 percent of respondents and half of Republicans now favor stronger gun control laws.

"We're not saying we want to take away every single gun from everyone".

"There was so much more that could have been done to prevent this", she said, fighting back tears.

With a mixture of outrage and passion, they have been badgering United States lawmakers to enact a ban on assault rifles and to expand background checks to cover all gun purchases, even private sales.
