Major Siri bug exposes all your hidden Signal messages on iPhone

Matt Elliott CNET

MacRumours replicated the bug on an iPhone X in its own tests, between iOS 11.2.6 and the current iOS 11.3 beta. But for other apps such as third-party email apps, Facebook Messenger, Slack, and many more, Siri will just spout off details about the notification without checking that it's the right person asking to hear them.

In a statement provided to MacRumors, Apple said "we are aware of the issue and it will be addressed in an upcoming software update". That setting is on by default on the iPhone X, where simply glancing at it will unlock the phone and allow the content to be displayed, while it can be set on other models. Luckily, Apple is aware of the issue and has promised it has a fix in the works.

The bug does not affect Apple's Messages app, but for third party messaging apps like WhatsApp, Skype or Telegram, Siri will read out these notifications on your lockscreen, even if your privacy settings for "Show Previews" is set to display only "When Unlocked" (Settings Notifications Show Previews).

As we have mentioned earlier, Apple has acknowledged the issue and is working on a fix which will be released in the form of an iOS update.

Ask Siri to read your notifications and it'll read out all your recent notifications even if you hide the preview. With this setting enabled, lock screen notifications will remain hidden until a user authenticates with Face ID, Touch ID or passcode.

Trump & Saudi Crown Prince Finalize $12.5B Weapons Deal
Trump Taking advantage of US-Saudi alliance to solve the Gulf crisis with Qatar. . He said a ten year window for implementing the deal was under way.

As pointed out by MacRumors, Apple iPhone X users have a reason to be anxious by this bug.

Apple's own Messages app isn't affected.

Gadgets Now tried it and was able to replicate the issue in the company's most advanced smartphone - iPhone X.

Setting Show Previews When Unlocked is another convenience that seems uncontroversial - sure, you'll see private information that's specific to an app without switching to the app itself, but only when your phone's unlocked.

If you want to lock your phone down until Apple implements a patch, there is a way to avoid any nosey people from getting on your phone.
