Saudi Crown Prince Will Visit Trump at the White House Next Week

Saudi sets up departments to investigate, prosecute corruption cases

President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed has sent a cable of condolences to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, on the death of Prince Bandar bin Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Numerous detainees surrendered huge sums of money in order to leave the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Riyadh, where the arrested were held.

In the early days of the crackdown, at least 17 detainees were hospitalized due to physical abuse and one later died in custody with neck injuries and other signs of abuse, according to a person who saw the body.

A doctor and two other people briefed on the condition of the body said that it had burn marks that appeared to be from electric shocks, the report said.

Numerous detainees have been released so far after forking out exorbitant amounts reaching as high as one billion dollars.

In November, Saudi Arabia launched an anti-corruption purge, arresting hundreds of the country's elite, including billionaires, government ministers, and royal family members.

Pentagon says 'no tanks' to Trump's request for Washington military parade
And formations donning "period uniforms" may be utilized to "represent veterans from previous wars", the letter said. As planning continues, the memo gave no more details on the type of weaponry to be featured in the parade.

Financial advisers and associates of the detainees have told the New York Times that numerous assets of those detained have yet to be seized and most of those already seized are domestic real estate and shares of companies that could take years to liquidate.

The former detainees were quoted by the newspaper as saying that numerous released are being forced to wear tracking devices on their ankles. "Even the house I am in, I am not sure if it is still mine".

The announcement comes as a New York Times report has suggested that numerous assets of the 381 princes, ministers and tycoons have yet to be seized while more than a dozen of the detainees were abused while they were held.

Abuse of power, nepotism and the use of middlemen, wasta, to do business are common, it says, suggesting that business practices in Saudi Arabia need to fundamentally change if corruption is to be eradicated, particularly given the overlap between business and politics.

The king's decision came from "his concern over combating corruption in all its forms aiming to protect the homeland and its resources, maintain public money and protect the integrity of the public employment", according to Saudi state media. Another of the late king's sons, Prince Mishaal bin Abdullah, complained about Gen. Qahtani's treatment to a circle of friends, and immediately afterward Prince Mishaal, too, was arrested and locked in the Ritz.
