The national unemployment rate remained at 4.1 percent for the month of January 2018.

Hancock County's rate climbed to 3.5 percent in January from 3.4 percent in December, the State Job and Family Services Department reported.

Miami and Fulton counties had unemployment rates of 4 percent.

Monroe County's unemployment rate rose, Pike County's rate fell, and leisure and hospitality continue to lead the field in employment gains in January. The unemployment rate of 3 percent is up slightly from 2.8 percent a year ago.

Overall, the area has stronger employment figures than it did at this time previous year.

Manufacturing jobs were up by more than 3,100 in January. The agency reported that the US economy added 313,000 jobs in February, marking the country's 89th consecutive month of job growth. That figure was four-tenths of a percent higher than a year earlier, when unemployment stood at 5.6 percent in the county.
