Kenyan opposition suspends plans to oust president

NARC Kenya chair-lady Martha Karua Addresses journalists at the party offices

In a series of communications seen by TUKO.co.ke on their respective Twitter pages, the ODM and Jubilee Party said they will be engaging each other on the basis of mutual and national respect.

Kenya's opposition has suspended the planned People's Assembly agenda aimed at removing President Uhuru Kenyatta from power after the latter and his main opponent shocked the nation on Friday by shaking hands and deciding to call for a truce.

Southern Africa Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) Executive Director Boniface Cheembe says Africa is looking at how Zambia will reciprocate following the reconciliation between Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga. But he said NASA will resume should the Uhuru-Raila agreement be breached. "This is the best legacy by our seniors, the best benefit to our citizenry", he said in a statement.

The co-principals were asked to surrender their mobile phones to their aides before the meeting started, which could be a sign of the growing mistrust within the coalition since Friday's events.

In a press address, Mr. Ndii hailed President Kenyatta and Mr. Odinga for acknowledging that the country was facing a unity crisis hence the need to commence a healing process.

Mr Odinga, it is also understood, has been uneasy with the Opposition's isolation by the West, which has denied him and his colleagues leverage to push their much-touted electoral and judicial reforms.

Odinga said last week he's abandoning a defiance campaign aimed at toppling President Uhuru Kenyatta.

However, during Monday's meeting, Mr Odinga expressed concerns that the growing isolation of the Nasa leadership would not in any way have served its interests.
