Big sister Venus spanks rusty Serena

Williams sisters set to face off at BNP Paribas Open

"I think she's going to be speeding back to the seedings and to winning tournaments sooner than later".

Asked if playing Monday brought closure to what happened in 2001, seven-time grand slam champion Venus replied: "It never crossed my mind". It is the earliest they have faced each other since their first encounter at the Australian Open in 1998.

But in her first competitive singles match in more than a year, Williams eventually settled into a comfort zone on the way to a satisfying 7-5, 6-3 win over Diyas to advance to the second round of the tournament. "It's another quite big match for me, and I will go out there, try to play like I played the last weeks and try to enjoy the next match".

No one would dispute that.

Wozniacki outlasted Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 for her 31st career match win at Indian Wells, where she has played 12 straight years.

And sister Venus complemented her: "Her level was super high".

Venus Williams served up a can of whoop ass on her little sister Serena Williams-a tough and familiar opponent-and cut her long-awaited comeback short at the BNP Paribas Open.

Houston Astros Visit Trump in Honor of World Series Win
These orders would allow law enforcement to confiscate firearms or other weapons from unsafe individuals after due process. NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre touted arming teachers in a speech last month to the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Serena said she is trying not to look too far into the season.

The sisters - as ever - exchanged a hug at the net. Serena ended the match with a forehand failing to find the court, one of her 41 unforced errors. Venus and her father Richard were greeted with boos as they made their way to their seats, with some fans believing Richard had been behind Venus's withdrawal. "For her, I think it was a really good match", Serena said. I wish it were, but it's not. "Then I wouldn't be who I am", Serena said.

"I have a lot to improve on", she said. "My room for improvement is incredible", Serena said.

"So I have just got to keep saying at each tournament that my goal is just to be better than the last".

"It's different, I haven't played in over a year".

Venus still has to go forward in in Indian Wells, whereas many of their previous tussles have taken place in finals and thus would have seen the victor hoist the trophy. But it seems the timing and rhythm on her shots, and her court instincts, are still not where they've been for the better part of two decades.

The 10th seeded Venus moves on to the round of 16 where she will face Anastasija Sevastova, who defeated 12th seeded Julia Georges 6-3, 6-3. So the added elements of the new mother's return would just make it even more challening.
