Democrats skeptical of success in Trump-Kim talks

GOP senator Need to ratchet up pressure on NK

SIn an extraordinary development after months of sabre-rattling and trading of personal insults, US President Donald Trump and North Korea's reclusive dictator Kim Jong Un are set to hold a face-to-face meeting "by May" over Pyongyang's controversial nuclear and missile programmes. "This is North Korea's opportunity to do the right thing".

The talks would be the first between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader and will take place by May, according to South Korea's national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, who delivered the invitation to Trump after a visit by his delegation to Pyongyang earlier this week. One day before Trump agreed to meet with Kim, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had said conditions weren't right to meet with North Korea. Tammy Duckworth, a Democrat from IL, said she welcomed Trump's "embrace of diplomacy" even as she offered a strong warning. The two countries have been in a formal state of war since the Korean War in the 1950s.

"We have to see concrete and verifiable actions take place", said White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who repeatedly told reporters that the U.S.is giving up nothing in order to have this high level summit. The American leader initially proposed holding the summit in April. While she was in town for a separate announcement, Gillibrand addressed the potential upcoming meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un. "And they have said that the goal is denuclearization, but they have not said that denuclearization will occur before this meeting takes place", Countryman said on CNN.

Trump took office vowing to stop North Korea from attaining a nuclear-tipped missile that could reach the US mainland.

On the campaign trail he signaled a couple of times that he would be open to direct talks, but more recently belittled Tillerson's attempts to bring Kim to the negotiating table.

USA officials said Pyongyang had scrapped secretly planned talks at the last minute after Pence denounced abuses from North Korea's "murderous regime". Recognition that U.S. -South Korea military exercises are a necessity and not a threat to the North would be another good sign. He has derided Kim by referring to him as "Little Rocket Man".

After Kim made threats against the United States in a New Year's address and mentioned the "nuclear button" on his office desk, Trump responded by tweeting that he has a nuclear button, too, "but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"

North Korea's Kim Jong-un joked about his image in global media while serving South Korean officials local spirits and cold noodles during their unprecedented visit to Pyongyang this week, South Korean sources say. But nuclear weapons also provide prestige - after all, if he didn't have them, could he get the president of the United States to meet with him? - placing his country among the world's elite. Kim also told the South Koreans he understands that the USA and South Korea would move forward with their joint military exercises later this year.

In February, Ivanka visited South Korea for the Winter Olympics. The drills are expected to resume next month.

He said that the North Korean leader has expressed his "commitment to denuclearisation" and will "refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests" during the negotiations.

Chung Eui-yong, South Korea's national security adviser, first made the announcement at the White House on Thursday evening, later confirmed by Trump in a social media post. The North Korean offer to talk is not official until it is reported by a North Korean source. "Hopefully, you will give me credit". If the North uses those exercises - scheduled to resume after the Olympic Games suspension - as an excuse to resume testing then we can be sure that it is not honest in its offer to talk.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters traveling with him in Ethiopia earlier on Thursday that the U.S. was "a long way from negotiations".
