Everything You Need to Know About International Women's Day on March 8

Telangana govt has declared a special casual leave to all women employees in the state on Thursday

There are more girls in school than ever before; more women are doing paid work and in senior roles in the private sector, academia, politics and in global organizations, including the United Nations.

"While women are equally represented across the ABC board and in our leadership positions, International Women's Day affords us the opportunity to focus attention on the work still to be done", Ms Guthrie said.

The day in 1909 was marked informally with marches and actions until 1914, when International Working Women's Day was declared for March 8 of that year, a Sunday, so more women could participate.

Where laws exist, they are often ignored, and women who pursue legal redress are doubted, denigrated and dismissed.

Despite receiving a fair amount of ridicule and criticism, its supporters argue it is crucial to raise awareness about serious issues affecting men, many of which are still seen as taboo in society and need wider recognition. That's why I've launched my campaign #BehindEveryGreatCity which will shine a light on gender inequality and try to drive change.

We at the United State of Women have spent the previous year traveling across the country to cities such as Chicago, Atlanta, Nashville, San Francisco and Los Angeles, working with local partners to galvanize thousands of women to lead change in their own communities.

The theme for this year's International Women's Day is "Press for Progress: Transforming Women's Lives". "We can not ignore the enormous consequences this has on women, families, communities, societies and the economy - we need to make sure that violence against women becomes a problem of the past and for this we need to speak out".

Secret Service: Male shot himself to death near White House
A White House official told Fox News: "The White House is aware of the situation and the president's been briefed". The Secret Service says a man shot himself outside the White House, and medical personnel are on the scene.

The challenge remains that the negative rhetoric is the very fabric that creates the glass ceiling for women's progress.

In some cases, it is not even a misstep - it is a deliberate twisting of facts in efforts to put dirt on shining and upcoming women.

The road to equality is long, it has many obstacles, but we must walk it together as we #PressforProgress. It will be proper to say it's a political confusion. "In addition, we need to ensure that role models and an understanding of careers in technology are available not just to female students, but also to their parents and teachers, who are their prime influencers".

However, we will not lose focus on the huge amount there is still to do to ensure that women aren't discriminated against due to their gender.

We celebrate those women, who at various levels have crashed the glass ceiling and made it.

Indeed, it suggests that while having a confident personality boosts men's chances of job promotion by 3.3%, women gain no sizeable benefit. "What man can do woman can do or even better". Too many women are still locked out of the corridors of our parliament and the chambers of our boardrooms.

This year is the 125th anniversary of New Zealand women's suffrage and the 70th anniversary of the United Nations declaration of human rights, so come December 31st it would be wonderful to look back on a year of substantial progress.
