Parents gunned down by their son on Central Michigan U. campus

Police Central Michigan University shooting suspect in custody

He was released to his parents on Friday morning and they took him to his dorm room in Campbell Hall.

Davis was taken into custody early Saturday, March 3, after authorities say he shot and killed two people in a Central Michigan University dorm before fleeing campus.

James Eric Davis, described as a university student, was turned in by "an individual on a train passing through the north end of campus shortly after midnight", university officials said.

The university, in Mount Pleasant, identified the victims as the suspect's parents: James Eric Davis Sr., 48, and Diva Jeenen Davis, 47.

Davis Jr.'s father, James Eric Davis, Sr., was a police officer and a veteran who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom as part of the Illinois National Guard. Many students had already left campus while others were planning to leave Friday.

Central Michigan University was established in 1892, and is one of the largest universities in the state.

The shooting happened just before 9 a.m. Friday on the fourth floor of Campbell Hall, a residential tower.

Davis told the officer that he had just shared an elevator with the person who wanted to harm him, but when police reviewed surveillance video of the elevator ride, Davis and the person appeared to be laughing and not in confrontation. More than 100 officers from multiple police agencies were searching for the younger Davis, the campus police said in their evening statement.

Video cameras caught Davis Jr. heading north Friday morning off campus and into downtown Mt.

CMU President George E. Ross said the university will be responding to this incident by re-doubling their safety efforts and providing students with professional counseling available after they return from spring break.

"He was the guy I could talk to when I needed to tell someone something", he said, adding he spoke to Davis the day before the shooting and he seemed "normal". Purple bunting hung outside the Bellwood Police Department Saturday in honor of Davis, Sr.

A men's basketball game scheduled for Friday night between Central Michigan and Western Michigan University was postponed.

"I knew James for nearly 20 years". He said police had first come into contact with Davis Jr. on Thursday morning when he came running into a community police officer's office in his dorm "very frightened" and "not making a lot of sense". Pleasant for an evaluation and his parents made the trip from IL to Mt.

The murders took place as thousands of CMU students and staff were preparing to leave the campus for spring break.

"We had picnics in our backyard", Leal said.

Police had called on Mount Pleasant residents to help locate Davis on Friday.
