Wife of Kentucky lawmaker who killed himself loses election bid

Rebecca Johnson

Voters in Bullitt County, a Kentucky district south of Louisville that went heavily for Trump in 2016, just elected a Democrat to fill a House seat left vacant by a legislator who committed suicide amid allegations of sexual assault.

Father-of-five and pastor Johnson, 57, also made headlines for posting racist pictures likening the Obamas to monkeys.

"People are using their votes and voices to take a stand against the anti-Kentuckian policies of the Republican majority", Ben Self, chair of the Kentucky Democratic Party, said in a statement.

Belcher will now face a Republican challenger again in the general election this fall, which could again be Rebecca Johnson, as she and Thomas Huff will face off in the Republican primary in May. She garnered 68 percent of the vote to Rebecca Johnson's roughly 32 percent, member station WFPL reports. Bullitt County Clerk Kevin Mooney said the problem was fixed and poll workers were instructed to send affected voters to another precinct. In 2016, Donald Trump received 73 percent of the vote in the county compared to Hillary Clinton's 23 percent, and Republican Matt Bevin also won a landslide victory there in the 2015 gubernatorial race. Belcher first ran for the seat in 2009 as a widow, as well, after her husband Rep. Larry Belcher (D) died in a vehicle crash in 2008.

Russian civilians in Syria not linked to our military
The pilot survived the initial attack and ejected, but died in a ground fight, detonating his grenade to avoid being captured. The mercenaries are said to have been hired by private military firms backing Syrian pro-government troops.

Although Trump won by a 49-point margin in 2016, the district isn't reliably red-Democrats have held the state House seat for six of the last 10 years, and the last three elections have been won by a margin of six points or fewer.

Belcher said it was "hard to say" if sexual assault allegations against Dan Johnson and his death played a part in the election, adding: "I have tried to stay very positive and away from that whole situation". 'It's like we are in a third world country'.

Of course, special elections aren't necessarily indicative of midterm success. In 2018 alone, Democrats have won Republican-held state legislative districts in Missouri, Wisconsin and Florida.
