Flu deaths hit 79 in Ga

Why it's been such a tough flu season for children

In 2010, a policy brief published by the Institute for Women's Policy Research used data from the CDC and the BLS to estimate that during the virulent 2009 flu season, about 8 million American workers went to work while infected with the influenza virus, causing an additional 7 million people to get sick in the process.

The post Number of students with flu decreases significantly this year, despite national epidemic appeared first on Emerald Media.

Studies found many flu vaccines are not as effective because scientists grow them in chicken eggs.

The number of doctor visits for flu-like symptoms plateaued in the week ended February 10, accounting for 7.5 percent of medical appointments, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Even with the tragic increase in pediatric deaths, the CDC said that there are signs that the season is finally peaking after several particularly nasty weeks.

"Hospitalization rates are significantly higher than what we've seen for this time of year since our current tracking system began nearly a decade ago", Schuchat added. "The flu viruses weakens your immune system and you can get a bacterial infection on top of it", explains Dr. Alicia Fry, of the CDC Influenza Prevention and Control Team.

"Clearly we need either better vaccines or better use of current vaccines, choosing those products that might work better", he said. This process takes about four to six months, and sometimes flu strains mutate so much the shots don't provide adequate protection.

Bill Gates- Why we give our billions away
They expanded on some of those themes and fielded questions about other topics in the recent interview. A White House spokesman did not respond to requests for comment.

The health center has been advertising "Duck the flu" since 2005 to inform students to get their flu shots and stay healthy through flu season. To prepare for each flu season, the FDA has a key role in selecting the strains to be included in the annual vaccine.

The federal government has announced funding for two new flu vaccines to better protect older Australians. "Sometimes they matter and sometimes they don't, but what seems to make the most difference is immune history".

Part of the problem is that this season's flu vaccine was only about 30 percent effective.

The vaccine, we know, the influenza vaccine, is never ideal. Because there is often more than one type of influenza virus circulating each season, influenza vaccines are created to target three or four of the most likely influenza viruses of the season: two influenza A types (H1N1 and H3N2) and one (trivalent) or two (quadrivalent) types of influenza B. In the early part of each year, the FDA, World Health Organization (WHO), CDC, NIH, and other partners collaborate by collecting and reviewing data on the circulating strains of influenza from around the world to identify those likely to cause the most illness in the upcoming season.

Of course, the Holy Grail would be the so-called "universal influenza vaccine", at least universal across all those influenza A strains.

Still, drugmakers are scrambling to produce a better vaccine called a "universal vaccine". New vaccines grown without eggs, either in insect cells or dog kidney cells, are much less prone to developing mutations that can make them less protective against the flu.

'The flu is incredibly hard to predict and we don't know if we've hit the peak yet, ' Dr Schuchat said.
