Proposed Budget Cuts Could Impact Food Banks and SNAP Recipients

WENY News - White House Wants To Deliver Food To The Poor, Blue Apron-Style

The US government under the leadership of President Donald Trump is actually considering to replace some portions of the food stamp program by the federal government with boxes of actual food which will be delivered to recipients on their front doors.

Currently SNAP recipients can choose what they spend the money on while shopping at any approved retailer. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) now has strict restrictions on what can be purchased with these benefits.

Households receiving at least $90 in combined SNAP/EBT benefits would instead get about half of that benefit in the form of a food box.

The president of Feeding America Matt Knott said food stamps are created to be the first line of defense against hunger and that the infrastructure of food banks and other charities wouldn't be able to make up for the cuts. About 44 million people participated in SNAP each month in 2016, at an annual cost of $70.9 billion.

Mick Mulvaney, director of the Office of Management and Budget, said the newly proposed plan would resemble a "Blue Apron-type programme".

The boxes are said to include non-perishable items such as shelf-stable milk, pasta, cereal, peanut butter, and canned fruits and vegetables. But if you want us to to make better choices, you need to have an educational program in K-12 that is funded.

"It lowers the cost to us because we can buy prices at wholesale, whereas they have to buy it at retail", Mulvaney added.

At the LA mission-they make 700 boxes of food a week for needy families. "So we're pretty excited about that".

Power-sharing talks in Northern Ireland collapse
If direct rule were imposed, it would be for the first time since 2007, when Tony Blair was prime minister, the BBC says. Speaking at a press conference, she said that DUP leader Arlene Foster brought the talks to a close.

The proposal is part of a broader plan to gut the SNAP program, reducing it by roughly $213 billion - almost 30 per cent - over the next decade. She also thinks it's disrespectful to those who need it the most.

Blue Apron might have a bit more competition soon.

"It maintains the same level of food value as SNAP participants now receive, provides states flexibility in administering the program, and is responsible to the taxpayers", Perdue said in a Department of Agriculture summary.

"This sounds like something from the Great Depression, not 2018", Democratic Representative Jim McGovern tweeted.

A North Carolina State University researcher concerned with food stamps and nutrition said the proposal leaves unanswered questions about the nutritional value of the food the government would send.

Proposed cuts in the budget could greatly impact those who rely on food benefits and the food bank to help.

Other social media users proceeded to mercilessly drag Trump's new proposal with a slew of memes, taunts and comments.
