Onboard brawl forces cruise ship to make unscheduled stop

Passengers say they were'disgusted by the three-day brawl on board Carnival's Legend cruise ship

A violent 30-person brawl broke out on a relaxing family cruise ship in what has been dubbed the "cruise from hell".

The Carnival Legend cruise was forced to make an impromptu stop at Eden Port on the country's south coast so police officers could remove the violent men.

Footage from onboard the 10-day South Pacific cruise, sent to Australian broadcaster 3AW, shows the ship's security staff trying to break up a fight between both male and female passengers.

Zac suggested the drama between his family and another party on the ship started following a misunderstanding over a thong.

"We're scared. We've been told to watch our backs by this group so we're scared to go anywhere alone in the ship".

A NSW Police spokeswoman confirmed a planned police operation was under way on the ship.

Carnival Legend is scheduled to dock in Melbourne about mid-morning on Saturday and the incident has caused a slight delay in the itinerary.

Passengers tell 9News that people were left bloodied after clashes between two groups of passengers, including members of an Australian family, who threatened to stab others and throw them overboard.

Some guests, many of whom were cruising with young children, went as far as to describe their voyage as the "cruise from hell", alleging that the security staff had attempted to destroy images and footage from the incident.

David Barkho, whose son was on the cruise, told 3AW that he received a call from him around 1 a.m. asking if he could call the police.

His 20-year-old son said "a lot of people are bleeding, a lot of people down". "I could hear a lot of screaming, crying in the background". Security intervened and detained the men before notifying the Marine Area Command.

"Fights have been going on for a few days now", she told the radio station.

"A number of people are expected to be removed", a police spokeswoman said in a statement on Friday.

One woman yelled that she had been mistreated on board as she was being removed.

"Disembarking a family from a cruise in an unprecedented incident, it is always our last resort and therefore we felt it was the best course of action for the safety and security of our guests and crew", She said.

'The ship's highly trained security staff have engaged with a small group of disruptive guests and ensured that they are fully aware of and are compliant with our zero tolerance policy.
