Chicago police commander killed assisting on call

Chicago Police Officer Shot, Killed After Responding to Chase While Off Duty

Chicago Police commander Paul Bauer was on duty when he was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon at the Thompson Center downtown.

The suspect is a four-time convicted felon named Shomari Legghette, according to WGN News. "I've been meeting with his wife and daughter this is a hard day for us but we will get through it".

Bauer is the first Chicago police officer to be shot and killed in the line of duty since 2011.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson choked back tears as he spoke to reporters outside Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where Bauer was pronounced dead.

"We are deeply saddened by the death of Commander Bauer, a hero who dedicated his life to protecting the people of Chicago and the state of IL", said Gov. Rauner.

"I just asked the citizens of the city to keep the Bauer family in their prayers", Johnson said.

A procession of law enforcement vehicles took Bauer's body to the medical examiner's office.

There were initial media reports that the man may have been involved in the robbery of a local business, but Johnson did not provide details about what the man was doing that prompted officers to want to speak with him. "There is a lot of mistrust with the Police Department", Bauer said, according to the newspaper. They wanted to stop him because he matched the description of a suspect in a shooting earlier this month.

Police captured the man a short time later, and a gun was recovered at the scene, he said.

"We're not talking about the guy that stole a loaf of bread from the store to feed his family", Bauer told the Loop North News a year ago, according to the Tribune.

Officers also returned to the Thompson Center on Wednesday morning, showing commuters a photo of the suspect.

As news of Bauer's killing spread, shocked colleagues mourned the loss of a veteran commander known as a steady leader who deftly handled the pressure of commanding police in the city's highest profile district.

Witnesses to parts of the incident near said they heard gunshots. We're talking about career robbers, burglars, drug dealers. "They need to be off the street".

"It is a hard day for us, but we will get through it", Johnson said outside the hospital where Bauer was taken. "Maybe I'm jaded, I don't think that's anything to be proud of", he said. Commander Bauer, who was in uniform and had just completed a training exercise nearby, intervened to try and stop the man, who reportedly opened fire.

Chicago's continuing battle with criminal violence is illustrated by the fact he was not the only shooting victim in the long-suffering city on Tuesday.
