Modi In Ramallah:India Hopes Palestine Will Soon Become A 'Free Country'

President of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas presents to Prime Minister Narendra Modi a portrait with his name inscribed in Arabic in New Delhi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Abu Dhabi from Palestine on Saturday evening on a two-day state visit.

New Delhi has long backed the Palestinian territories' quest for nationhood and Modi has voiced support for an independent state existing peacefully alongside Israel.

Officials have said India continues to support the Palestinian cause, and that Modi's visit is aimed at helping build up the Palestinians' capacity in the health, information technology and education areas.

Since U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December, Abbas has been seeking worldwide support for countries from Europe and the Middle East to be included as mediators between Palestine and Israel - efforts that the U.S. has led. After their talks, Modi said he has assured Abbas that is committed to the Palestinian people's interests.

"We hope for peace and stability in Palestine, we believe a permanent solution is possible with dialogue".
