Durham student death: witness tells of 'shambles' of nightclub queue

A 19-year-old student has died after a fence reportedly fell over outside a nightclub in the Walkergate area of Durham

No-one pictured is thought to have been caught up in the tragedy Witnesses told how the large queue formed after the club stopped letting people in.

A spokeswoman said resuscitation attempts were made but "sadly the patient died at the scene".

The student, who did not wish to be named, said the rear entrance had been considerably busier than usual because the front entrance was closed, which he said was unusual on the university's busiest club night.

A 20-year-old student has died in a reported crushing incident in a nightclub queue in Durham.

"The circumstances surrounding her death are unclear at this time", Durham Police said in a statement.

The nightclub has been contacted for comment.

The deadly incident occurred at a popular night club, when a metal barrier collapsed under students during the massively popular drinking event.

"We continue to assist police and the company who provide our door staff to fully understand what led to this bad accident". She arrived last autumn to begin reading natural science with glowing references from her school where she was regarded in the highest possible terms.

"Those students close to her have lost a wonderful friend, whom in their shock they grieve for, alongside her family and friends".

Olivia Burt was described as an "exceptional sportswoman" and an "outstandingly able student". "It is hard to come to terms with her loss, and we will miss her greatly". She was part of the British Sailing team in the European Championships.

"People were trying to reason with them, telling the bouncers it wasn't safe and someone was going to get hurt", a bystander told the newspaper. She belonged to the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), and has been described by the RYA's Chris Atherton as "a popular and committed Junior Optimist squad sailor" with "drive, determination and good sportsmanship".

"Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time". An investigation by Durham constabulary and Durham county council has been launched to establish exactly what happened.

"You will appreciate that I am unable to share further details given the ongoing Police investigation. Our thoughts are with the young lady's family and friends".
