Amid Olympic thaw, Pence says allies united in isolating N. Korea

PHOTOS: Memorable moments at PyeongChang 2018 opening ceremonies

The two never shook hands or spoke, according to Pence's office, but the optics were startling nonetheless. Between the lunch and talks, they spent nearly three hours together.

Inside, it had seven more pictures of their meetings with Moon and the opening ceremony in Pyeongchang - four of them featuring the South Korean leader, who was described as president.

Kim Yo-jong was earlier considered part of a high-level North Korean delegation to the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, but Cheong Wa Dae spokesman Kim Eui- kyeom said she was here as a special envoy of the North Korean leader.

Moon responded that he would try to make it happen, the spokesman said. He said Moon also called for a quick resumption of dialogue between the U.S. and North Korea.

On the other hand, however, North Korea's goal could be to drive a wedge between the United States and South Korea.

The athletes elicited a standing ovation by most leaders in the VIP box, including Moon and Kim's sister.

This is in line with Moon's hopes that the inter-Korean detente could lead to broader negotiations on the core challenges facing the Korean Peninsula.

The North Korean delegation arrived in the South on Kim's private plane on Friday via Incheon worldwide airport to attend the opening ceremony of the Pyongchang Winter Olympics where Seoul and Pyongyang are represented by joint teams.

House Democrats face tough choice over budget deal and immigration
The Democratic leader in the US House of Representatives has broken records with an eight-hour speech on the House floor. The 77 year old democrat delivered her marathon speech standing wearing 4-inch heels and sipping nothing but water.

But Warmbier insisted his attendance in South Korea was "not political". The ongoing rapprochement mood flared after Kim Jong Un said in his New Year's Day address that he was willing to send an Olympic delegation. Individual athletes were invited to participate as "neutrals" if they could prove they had not used performance-enhancing drugs.

An early shot by North Korea's Han Soojin might have made a statement, if not altered the outcome.

Internal internet and wifi systems crashed at about 7:15 pm (1015 GMT or 6:15 pm Philippine time) on Friday and were still not back to normal at midday on Saturday, Games organisers said. Instead of eating with Moon and the other dignitaries, Pence ate with the American athletes.

At the opening ceremonies Friday, Pence sat stone-faced in his seat as Moon and North Korean officials stood together with much of the stadium to applaud their joint team of athletes. Those photos quickly went viral.

Among the previously incomprehensible scenes seen in the past 24 hours at the Olympics was this one: After the game the top North Korean officials and the South Korean president joined Bach in greeting the Korean players and posing for pictures with them.

Kim Yo Jong has been rapidly rising within the North's power structure and is believed to be in charge of shaping her brother's public persona.

"There is no daylight between the United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan on the need to continue to isolate North Korea economically and diplomatically until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missile program", Pence told reporters during a flight to the United States following his visit to South Korea, where the Olympic games are being held. Pyongyang has repeatedly said it needs a deterrent to stop the United States attacking it. But North Korea's record on human rights and the growing threat from its nuclear weapons program appeared out of mind.
