Alexis Sanchez Sets Shirt Sales Record Amidst United Financial Loss

Alexis Sanchez gets 16-month prison term for tax offences in Spain

United didn't splash out on transfer fees but did acquire Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in a swap deal that saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to the Emirates.

Manchester United have announced Alexis Sanchez has broken the club's records for shirt sales and social media interactions since joining from Arsenal in January.

In a statement issued by the Barcelona prosecutor, Sanchez was accused of defrauding the Spanish state of a combined 983,000 euros ($1.2 million) in image rights in 2012 and 2013 by using a shell company in Malta and omitting the earnings from tax returns.

Manchester United enjoyed record shirt sales in January thanks to the arrival of Alexis Sanchez, after suffering a £21.1million half-year loss at the end of 2017.

"To put that into context, the announcement posts generated 75 percent more interactions that the announcement of the sale of the world's most expensive player last summer when Neymar moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain".

The loss in the latter part of a year ago was down to changes in corporate tax rates in the United States, which were passed by Donald Trump's administration.

American-owned United said an exceptional "accounting write-off of £48.8 million" had been made with the USA corporate tax rate set to tumble from 35 percent to 21 percent following Trump's substantive enactment of U.S. tax reform in December. This adjusts projected revenue for the year 2018 to £585 million.

Sanchez joined Barcelona in July 2011 and played almost 150 games for the club before leaving for the Premier League three years later.

Woodward also gave an insight into the ongoing discussions over the next Premier League television contract, with Amazon and Facebook rumoured to be rivalling Sky and BT Sport for the next round of rights.

But Woodward, speaking as the club announced second quarter revenues of £163.9 million, up four percent on a year ago, insists United could afford to have Sanchez on board.
