Military parade an exercise in wastefuleness

Trump puts wheels in motion for military parade

Mr Trump asked military commanders to begin planning for a show of might similar to the one that he and his wife, Melania, saw on Bastille Day in Paris a year ago. But White House legislative director Marc Short shot back on MSNBC: "I'm not sure honoring the military is a waste of money". Macron's office wouldn't comment or confirm a date for the trip.

"The president was clearly joking with his comments, but what isn't a joke is that Democrats refuse to celebrate the accomplishments of past year that have helped all Americans", Sanders said.

Newly inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump (in red tie), first lady Melania (L), Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen (R) preside over a military parade during Trump's swearing ceremony in Washington, U.S., January 20, 2017.

Vote Vets, a left-leaning veterans group, rebuked the idea with retired Major Gen. Paul Eaton, a senior adviser to the group, saying: "The military is not Donald Trump's to use and abuse in this way".

May was the first world leader to visit Trump after his inauguration, but images of the two holding hands just before Trump embarked on his controversial travel ban were political kryptonite in Britain.

The Pentagon is still trying to figure out what an American military parade would look like.

Gary Woodland wins Phoenix Open in a playoff
They returned to the par-four 18th where Woodland was in a fairway bunker and Reavie in the fairway off the tee. Elsewhere, it was a great week for Phil Mickelson who finished in a tie for 5th despite a double-bogey on 18.

And Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., a Marine veteran who served in Iraq, said a parade makes little sense financially or in terms of worldwide relations. "Lots of military might", he told the French president.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump asked the Defense Department to "explore" the idea of a parade.

The United States has previously held military parades to mark the end of wars, most recently in 1991 after the the Gulf War.

Another military official, who spoke anonymously to the Washington Post, said the president took inspiration for his massive military drill from the French military's Bastille Day parade. Everyone knows that, there's no need to broadcast it. The president, who's entered into size contests with foreign despots before, isn't acting out of character by asking for a parade bigger than France's.

But the size and scope of any potential military parade is unknown at this time, making a cost estimate impossible, according to Pentagon spokesperson Lt. Col. Jamie Davis. Although it's too early for cost estimates, it's not hard to see the whole to-do costing millions of dollars in planning, transportation and security.
