Look Who Finally Made a Profit? Twitter Shares Surge

California officials pledge to reject offshore drilling

For Twitter, all of the recent good news may end up having some unintended negative consequences.

Although Twitter had a great fourth quarter, the rest of 2017 wasn't all too great.

Twitter's previous inability to turn a profit had confounded investors given the company's ubiquitous presence in the media and popularity among celebrities, athletes and politicians such as US President Donald Trump.

But Wall Street's enthusiasm could rebound on the company longer term.

Sell side analysts plays vital role in buying and selling a stock where 3 analysts rated Twitter, Inc. After a 40% run-up in its stock over the a year ago, it was already looking pricey. On the flip side, the stock is 17.12% away from the 52 week high.

In other Twitter news, Director Evan Clark Williams sold 452,500 shares of Twitter stock in a transaction that occurred on Thursday, June 29th.

"The stock's reaction to these results were out of proportion in our view", Weiser said in a research note. Twitter's DAUs grew 12% year over year as engagement continues to trend higher.

Twitter's results were impressive, at least if you grade on a curve. During the fourth quarter analysts expected that the company would generate earnings in the amount of $0.14 per share.

Snapchat shares skyrocket on first earnings beat with revived user growth
The business had revenue of $207.90 million during the quarter, compared to analysts' expectations of $236.71 million. The poor report included slowing user growth and a revenue miss, and showed no clear path to profitability.

The falling tally of users, closely watched by investors as a sign of future advertising sales potential, comes shortly after Twitter upped its efforts to diversify its sales beyond advertising, reporting $87m worth of revenue from data licensing and other avenues, up 10% from a year earlier, while advertising revenue crept ahead 1% to $644m.

And the company's gains seem to be coming from getting more of its users to come back to its service more often, rather than by substantially increasing its total number of users, said James Cakmak, a financial analyst with Monness, Crespi, Hardt, in a research note.

The company said Thursday it posted a modest $91 million profit in the final three months of 2017, marking the first time the company has had a profitable quarter since going public in 2013. And in the United States, the number actually declined by more than 1%. Video advertising grew as a precent of total revenue in the quarter, though Twitter did not say by how much. The top line was basically flat, up just 2%, which underscores the ongoing challenges that Twitter has always faced with monetization. Facebook and Google are gobbling up almost all of the growth in online advertising.

Facebook similarly reported a sequential drop in daily active users (DAUs) last quarter, which the dominant social network attributed to North America being a mature and saturated market.

In short, the team made it easier for advertisers to spend money.

Facebook Inc has 2.1 billion monthly users, while Snapchat owner Snap Inc, which does not report a monthly figure, has 187 million daily users. It also has an internationally recognized brand and user base.

Twitter COO Anthony Noto recently left to become the chief executive of SoFi.

Oppenheimer Asset Management Inc. trimmed its position in shares of Twitter, Inc. At its current stock price, that gives it a price-to-earning ratio of more than 70.
