Food nutrient linked to tumour growth, study shows

Mice with intensive forms of breast cancer which would have seen them die within weeks were given low-asparagine diets or else were treated with drugs that blocked the absorption of the nutrient.

Asparagine is an amino acid that is made naturally in the body as a building block for proteins.

Feeding mice with breast cancer a diet low in the amino acid asparagine significantly reduces their tumours' abilities to spread, a study found.

"This is a very promising lead and one of the very few instances where there is a scientific rationale for a dietary modification influencing cancer", said lead scientist Prof Greg Hannon, director of the Cancer Research UK Cancer Institute in Cambridge.

The researchers believe that asparagine is used by cancers to spread around the body after the initial growth of a tumour.

Studying the effects of asparagine also could alter treatments for other types of cancer, investigators say.

'When the availability of asparagine was reduced, tumour cells had reduced capacity for metastases in other parts of the body.

Ronald Koeman appointed coach of struggling Netherlands
A legend with the Netherlands national team, Koeman was capped 78 times as a player and won the European Championship in 1988. That has given him time to spend back home in the Netherlands , drawing hope from watching young players in the Eredivisie.

"This finding adds vital information to our understanding of how we can stop cancer spreading - the main reason patients die from their disease".

When scientists reduced asparagine in animals with breast cancer, they found that the number of secondary tumours in other tissues fell dramatically.

Researchers are now considering human trials to assess the impact of reducing dietary intake of asparagine.

"This is interesting research looking at how cutting off the supply of nutrients essential to cancer's spread could help restrain tumours". It's possible that in future, this drug could be re-purposed to help treat breast cancer patients. It was more likely to be restricted to one site, potentially making the cancer significantly less harmful.

But Martin Ledwick, from Cancer Research UK, said: "At the moment, there is no evidence that restricting certain foods can help fight cancer".
