Sony Announces All The New Features Coming To PS4 System Update 5.50

The Play Station 4 Has Peaked

One notable feature introduced in 5.50 (including library UI updates, enhancements to the quick menu, and customizable wallpapers) is playtime management, which allows family members to manage playtime for younger PS4 users.

The system will send a notification to the child when playtime is coming to an end, giving them enough time to save progress.

There's also the option to add extra game time and the choice to automatically log the child out of the PS4 once their allotted playtime is over.

Sony detailed the 5.50 update in a blog post. You can zoom and crop the image before saving it as your background, so no need to fiddle with dimensions or resolution beforehand. Background music may occasionally be unavailable, similar to when playing a game locally on the PS4. Update 5.50 will open things up even further: drop any image you like on a USB stick, plug it into your PS4, then go to Select Theme Custom Select Image USB Storage Device. Below that will be a section with your PlayStation Network ID, which will show all the PlayStation Store items you own. If you want to cut your kids' screen time, you can put restrictions on how long they can play or limit play time to certain hours. The PS4 section lists all of the apps and games now installed on the console, while the tab with your avatar and name shows what has been purchased with your PSN account. If your PS Plus membership has expired, a lock icon will appear next to the game showing that you'll be unable to play until you've re-subscribed to PS Plus.

If your Notifications tab makes you feel like you're in a particularly bad episode of Hoarders, you'll be glad to know that update 5.5 will make it possible to permanently delete any and all old notifications.

If you'd like to be considered for all of our System Software Betas, in addition to completing enrolment for this System Software Beta, please also complete the general enrolment form below. However, one big feature exclusive to PS4 Pro owners is the "Supersampling Mode". You'll also be able to customize your Tournaments team page with a team logo or other artwork saved off of a USB drive. Certain games already have "supersampling" benefits as part of their "PS4 Pro Enhanced" feature set, but this new mode can enhance the experience for those games that don't already have the feature.

As covered earlier, PS4 Pro supersampling is now also supported via the new firmware.

There are a handful of other new features that every PlayStation owner will benefit from as well.

Sony did not set a release date for firmware 5.50, but these beta test usually take about a month. The Quick Menu has also been updated with more options when you're listening to music through Spotify.
