How major United States stock indexes fared on Friday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,520.96 for a loss of -665.75 points or -2.54%.

That made the market ripe for investors to cash in part of their profits from the rally, and the growing interest rate worries provided one of the sparks to take money off the table, analysts said.

Alphabet fell 5.0 per cent after the Google parent's fourth-quarter profit came in below consensus on increased spending.

Industry observers say the almost 7% stock bump over the week signal speculation that the incoming CEO might be open to selling off the company's entertainment assets. In fact many say a pull back was overdue.

With the huge drop on Friday, the three major Wall Street indexes ended with their biggest losses for one week in almost two years, after closing the previous week at record highs.

"I don't think today's drops are a big surprise, and Monday's open (of trading) will tell us a lot more on the state of the stock market, once everyone has the weekend to reconsider their positions", he said.

The CBOE Volatility Index.VIX, the most widely followed barometer of expected near-term volatility for the S&P 500 Index rose more than four points to 17.86, its highest since November 2016.

Good news for workers is viewed as not-so-good news for stocks, as it suggests the economy is in danger of overheating.

About halfway through the earnings season, most companies have posted upside surprises. of the S&P 500 companies that have reported as of Friday morning, 78 percent have beaten bottom-line expectations, while 80 percent have surpassed sales estimates, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Its weekly rout hit 3.7 percent, most since February 2006.

Uma Thurman, Harvey Weinstein, Pulp fiction, Kill Bill, Quentin Tarantino

This morning's 1.2% decline in the US Dow Jones Industrial Average was led by a 5.2% decline in Exxon Mobil, which disappointed both on earnings and production.

The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 144.92 points, or 1.96 per cent, to 7,240.95.

A strong U.S.jobs report and a Fed executive's comment that there could be more than three interest rate hikes this year have spooked investors. The Nasdaq fell 74 points, or 1 percent, to 7,312.

U.S. stock markets ended the week last night with the biggest single-day loss of the Trump era, as investors adjusted their interest rate expectations following labour market data which showed signs of an increase in inflation. The 10-year Treasury yield popped above 2.85% for the first time since January 2014.

"The bond market sold off and the expectation is three maybe four rate hikes this year in light of the jobs report", said Nolte.

Other major indexes fell about 2 percent Friday.

The market slide may have been overdue, particularly after the strong start for stocks this year where the S&P 500 had its best January in two decades.

Some stocks bucked Friday's decline.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.84 percent.
