'Cold war mentality': China blasts United States nuclear review calling Beijing a threat

The Pentagon's Nuclear Posture Review has called for submarines to be armed with low-yield nuclear cruise missiles

The Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Tennessee returns to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.

Acting Undersecretary of State Anita Friedt listens to a question during a press conference on the Review of the Nuclear Posture 2018 at the Pentagon on Friday, February 2.

As the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump prepares to unveil its review of the U.S. nuclear posture, more experts are warning that developing a new type of nuclear weapon to meet President Donald Trump's demands would trigger an arms race.

The US military has put countering China and Russian Federation, dubbed "revisionist powers", at the centre of a new national defence strategy unveiled last month.

"The United States now faces a more diverse and advanced nuclear-threat environment than ever before, with considerable dynamism in potential adversaries' development and deployment programs for nuclear weapons and delivery systems", the document claimed.

The US nuclear doctrine, published on Friday, said that Russian Federation and China have added new types of nuclear capabilities to their arsenals, engaging in "increasingly aggressive behavior, including in outer space and cyberspace".

Earlier in a tweet, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned that the US policy document pose the risk of bringing humankind closer to annihilation.

Avoiding heart disease should be considered during breast cancer treatments
With this in mind, the AHA stresses the importance of closely monitoring heart function all throughout the treatment and after. More studies will need to be done to confirm whether the results of the smaller studies are seen in larger groups of patients.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed "deep disappointment" at the plan.

However, America is concerned that its arsenal won't remain an effective deterrent without being modernized. The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima had about the same explosive power.

China's defence ministry spokesman, Mr Ren Guoqiang, responded in a statement yesterday that China is "firmly opposed" to the US' new nuclear weapons policy statement, describing its speculation about Chinese intentions as "wild guesses".

Low-yield nuclear weapons, while still devastating, have a strength of less than 20 kilotons. Modifying some submarine-launched nuclear warheads to give a lower-yield detonation.

"Peace and development are irreversible trends of the world and as the country with the largest nuclear arsenal, the United States should follow instead of going against this trend", Ren said in the statement.

This isn't the first time that China has used the Cold War label to denounce USA policy. Late past year it denounced Washington's updated defence strategy and urged the U.S. to abandon "outdated notions".

The document also says China continues to increase the number, capabilities and protection of its nuclear forces.
