6 more weeks of winter: Punxsutawney Phil sees shadow for 104th time

Groundhog Day 2018: Punxsutawney Phil Sees Shadow, Ushers In 6 More Weeks Of Winter

We base our forecast on science - not shadows! To learn more about how Punxsutawney Phil's forecasts have compared to US national temperatures since 1988, visit our Groundhog Day page. But he's always popular. If not, spring comes early. If an animal saw its shadow on Candlemas Day, this meant six more weeks of winter, or the "Second Winter". For Ohioans more inclined to follow our own groundhog's forecast, Buckeye Chuck is on track to give his prediction at 7:40 a.m. There are no records for the remaining years.

However, even when Phil's predictions are accurate, they may not be accurate for the entire country.

If the groundhog doesn't see its shadow, spring is around the corner.

The standing Punxsutawney Groundhog Club president is the only person able to interpret Phil's official language known as "Groundhogese".

Punxsutawney Phil started predicting the weather in 1886 - 16 years after the National Weather Service was founded. As far as history is concerned, the groundhog tends to make random predictions. It gets pretty weird.

Punxsutawney is where Groundhog Day originated on February 2, 1886, and is where a ceremony is held every year. The original Milltown Mel died in July 2015, but his friend took over his name and has carried on with the tradition.

Carrie Underwood's Husband Mike Fisher Not Retiring From Hockey After All!
And make no mistake, there is no doubt that Fisher will be in shape at some point before the February 26 deadline. Fisher started skating Wednesday and will spend the next few weeks working himself into shape to rejoin the team.

However, Phil's prediction was decided ahead of time by the top hat and tuxedo-wearing members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's Inner Circle. Since 1988, the groundhog was "right" 14 times and "wrong" 16 times.

Groundhog Day is said to come from a European tradition called "Candlemas".

When Pennsylvania's most famous groundhog sees his shadow, winter weather continues for six more weeks, legend has it. But both February and March ended up warmer than average across the nation, NOAA said. If Phil doesn't see his shadow, and early spring can be expected.

Grizzly bears, Will and Wiley enjoy boxes filled with fruits and vegetables during a Groundhog Day ceremony at the Oklahoma City Zoo Thursday, February 2, 2012.

But its origins date back to the 1800s in the United States when it was brought over from Europe by German immigrants who later became known as Pennsylvanian Dutch.
