Avoiding heart disease should be considered during breast cancer treatments

More than a quarter of those who called Macmillan Cancer Support's telephone helpline with money worries asked for guidance on their mortgage

"We want to learn from what they have been able to achieve [for breast cancer] and we can see the correlation between that investment in research and the progress that then follows in terms of reducing the number of deaths", said Culhane.

"More men are now dying from prostate cancer each year than women are from breast cancer, according to new figures".

HER-2 directed therapies are created to combat particularly aggressive forms of breast cancer, but the treatments might be doing more harm than good, research has found.

Identifying at-risk patients is crucial. But in some breast cancer patients, heart failure can be permanent. Biomarkers such as brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and troponin I are indicators of chemotherapy-induced cardiac disease and may accurately reflect radiotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity occurrence as well.

It said an unprecedented number of women are surviving the disease yet face a risk of developing heart problems, in part due to their cancer treatments. The AHA statement also advised oncologists that the cardiovascular risks of certain classes of chemotherapies outweigh the benefits for women with cancer. An estimated 47 million women in the USA have heart disease.

With this in mind, the AHA stresses the importance of closely monitoring heart function all throughout the treatment and after.

Some studies have already indicated that administering chemotherapy agents in new ways may reduce their negative effects on the heart.

There are more than 3 million breast cancer survivors and almost 48 million women with heart disease in the United States.

Syria talks agree to set up constitution committee
Along with Turkey and Iran , it is pursuing its own peace process for Syria while the United Nations backs a separate plan.

Prostate cancer has become the third most common cause of cancer death in the United Kingdom, overtaking breast cancer, despite improvements in survival rates for both.

Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society and a longtime critic of overtreating breast cancer, said the report is a reminder to oncologists that side effects of cancer treatments can do real harm to patients.

Its cardiotoxicity has always been known, but studies now indicate that administering the drug slowly, rather than all at once, may reduce the risk of cardiac damage, the AHA report said. More studies will need to be done to confirm whether the results of the smaller studies are seen in larger groups of patients.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in women, accounting for 1 in 3 deaths.

"As the population ages, there will likely be more women with breast cancer, CVD, or both", Mehta et al. said.

Some research suggests that powerful new drugs that harness the immune system to fight cancer may, in rare cases, cause heart damage, especially when used together.

Another treatment, radiation, can cause blockages in the heart, but doctors are developing more-targeted radiation to reduce the risks of those problems. That's because the risk of developing a heart problem is lifelong with some of the treatments. "With the evolving intersection of the cardiovascular and oncologic fields, comprehensive care is an essential element in the management of cancer patients to maximize gains in cancer treatment while minimizing the potential deleterious impact on cardiovascular health".
