The shocking thing about Nintendo Switch sales: Nintendo could have done better

Consoles power up Nintendo like nothing else

Overall Nintendo has had an exceptional quarter and, indeed, year since the Switch was launched. In the Switch's first 10 months on sale, ending December 31st 2017, Nintendo managed to sell 14.86 million units. A reported 7.23 million of those units were sold in the last quarter alone. With third-party game developers not expected to release blockbuster titles for the Switch until at least 2019, 2018 could bring a drop off in sales. Super Mario Odyssey was the best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch, with 9.07 million copies sold since it was released in October. The company reconfirmed that a new Pokemon game would be released for Switch "in 2018 or later".

The console has confounded experts with its success despite lacking the power of Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4, and despite its inability to stream movies or browse the web.

The top selling game is Super Mario Odyssey.

Study says e-cigarettes may lead to cancer and heart disease
A study in mice, published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , is sure to provide fodder for both sides. In a new study, scientists warned that nicotine in e-cigarettes could convert into DNA-damaging chemicals.

The Switch, released in March 2017, flew off shelves at home and overseas through the critical year-end shopping season.

Profits also came in at an eight-year-high of ¥116.5bn (£1.3bn), marking a whopping year-over-year increase of 261 per cent. Since the Wii U's release a little over five years ago, it has sold 13.56 million units total. In fact, the console may even be able to eclipse the Wii's sales successes when all is said and done. As part of its quarterly report, Nintendo said the Switch has moved 14.86 million units as of the end of 2017.

In what may just be the most inevitable milestone in video game history, Nintendo has announced that the Switch has officially outsold the Wii U. It now expects to make a profit of 160 billion yen ($1.47 billion/£1.03 billion), 33.3% above previous forecasts. To break it down even further, 3.72 million of those were in Japan, 5.94 million in the Americas and 5.2 million in the land of "Others", which includes us humble Europeans.
