Over 700000 rouge apps removed from Google Play Store in 2017

Google rolls out update for 'Files Go' app, here are the new features

If you are wondering just how many malicious apps are really out there, we just learned Google removed over 700,000 apps from Google Play Store in 2017. It means that the Google Play Protect scanning is improving, able to detect and catch more abusive apps.

The apps removed were from 100,000 developers and as a result those developers, some of whom were repeat offenders, were summarily booted from the Google Play Store. "Despite the new and enhanced detection capabilities that led to a record-high takedown of bad apps and malicious developers, we know a few still manage to evade and trick our layers of defense", says Ahn. It also notes that famous titles get a lot of search traffic for particular keywords, and the bad actors try to cash on this traffic.

In a Tuesday blog post, Google outlined some Play Store security stats, an unusual move for the company that signals a larger shift within Google. It added that it took down over 250,000 copycat apps (those trying to piggyback off the success of popular apps) and "tens of thousands" of apps violating policies against apps that feature hate speech, illegal acts and porn.

Google revealed it removed 700,000 bad apps previous year to remind developers it wants create to have a safe place for users to install apps.

The figures reveal a worrying uptick in malware or copycat apps, but also shows Google is becoming increasingly adept at dealing with the problem.

Magic Johnson Calls For Firings Amid Michigan State Sexual Assault Scandal
Former sports doctor Larry Nassar has been sentenced to 175 years in state prison, but he likely won't serve his time in MI . "If we have learned anything from the Nassar sentencing, too many voices of too many victims were unheard".

Elsewhere, Google reduced the rate of potentially harmful application (PHA) installations by a factor of 10 compared to 2016.

The battle over clean, non-malicious apps on Google Play is a never-ending battle that Google is constantly finding new ways to address.

Sensor Tower's Store Intelligence estimates show that year-over-year spending in these apps during the fourth quarter of last year grew almost 88 percent to approximately $242 million, up from an estimated $129 million in the same quarter a year ago.

Google put all of the various malware scanning under Google Play Protect a year ago. Google said that Google Play Protect will continue to be updated as well as the other security measures that are used in Google Play Store. "Now that Google Play has reached critical mass, we've definitely shifted gears to focus on building a trusted and safe store". In short, these apps are created to do actual harm. If there's a fix that requires a newer OS, you're stuck.
