5 dead after militants attack military base in Kabul

Afghan Presidential Spokesman Shahhussain Murtazawi has confirmed the attack on Marshal Fahim Military University in Kabul and said the attackers have been restricted to the first gate of the academy.

Defence ministry spokesperson Dawlat Waziri said that three attackers have been killed and one arrested while one continues to fight after the attack.

He further added, "Two security force members were also killed and 10 others were wounded".

An attacker drove an ambulance filled with explosives into the heart of the city on Saturday, killing at least 103 people and wounding another 235.

Pakistan, which denies accusations it fosters the Afghan war, condemned the attack and called for "concerted efforts and effective cooperation" to tackle militancy. Smaller blasts and gunfire were frequently heard during the attack.

"One bomber detonated himself and the rest of the attackers are resisting".

Exceptional Rise of Seine River Waters Expected in France
The rising Seine is spilling into the streets and wreaking havoc on the city after almost a week of heavy rainfall in Paris . The water level in the river is expected to peak at around 6m (19ft 6in), which is at least 4m above its normal level.

The Afghan security forces have cordoned off the area as the attack is ongoing.

The military complex, which is located in the 5th police district of Kabul, is near the site of a suicide bombing in October 2017. The Taliban claimed the responsibility for both the attacks.

Earlier, a local resident, Mohammad Ehsan, said he heard explosions near Marshal Fahim University and they lasted for at least an hour.

Afghan military institutions are frequently targeted by militants.

But there is still confusion over the true toll from that attack with conflicting figures given by officials and Afghan media reporting higher numbers.

Several foreign organisations, including humanitarian groups, are reassessing their operations after a particularly deadly week in the country.
