Grassley calls on Senate Judiciary to release Trump Jr. interviews

The Senate Judiciary Committee is finishing its investigation into a June 2016 meeting between Russians and President Donald Trump's campaign, and the Republican chairman of that panel says he wants to release transcripts from closed-door interviews with Trump's son and others.

Trump Jr. had told investigators he had set up the meeting because Veselnitskaya might have had damaging information about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, his father's opponent. Veselnitskaya maintained that the original objective of the meeting was to discuss sanctions that had been levied against Russian Federation.

Trump Jr. has said that the meeting, which was arranged through publicist Rob Goldstone, primarily focused on U.S. -Russia adoption policies.

The panel has not been able to interview Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, or Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager, even though both attended the Trump Tower meeting.

Grassley said Feinstein's decision to release that transcript "undermines the integrity of the committee's oversight work".

Despite Grassley's supposed frustration with Feinstein's decision to release Simpson's testimony, the GOP committee chairman claims he is now interested in full transparency on those witness testimonies.

The Des Moines Register reports Chairman Grassley said Friday that he had referred former British spy Christopher Steele to the Justice Department for investigation about false statements he may have made to the government.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the Senate Judiciary Committee's top Democrat, expressed delight in response to Mr Grassley's comments.

"Let's get them out there for everyone to see", he said.

Supreme Court Stays Execution For Cop-Killer
Supreme Court's decision to stay the execution of Vernon Madison since he had previously been ruled competent to face execution. Madison has been convicted three times in the shooting of Mobile Police Corporal Julius Schulte, back in April 1985.

"As a result, it looks like our chances of getting a voluntary interview with Mr. Kushner have been shot", Grassley said.

The committee would release transcripts of interviews with Trump Jr., Akhmetshin, Kaveladze, Samochornov, and Goldstone.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is one of multiple congressional panels investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election and whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin.

The memo "may be innocuous, but it also may not be innocuous, and they need to work through that", Cornyn said. The committee's interviews, which were conducted behind closed doors, are complete, he added.

Democrats, in turn, accuse Republicans of conducting a smear campaign meant to protect Trump by discrediting Mueller's investigation.

Meanwhile, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer criticized the Republicans who have been escalating attacks on the FBI and Justice Department as Mueller's investigation has come closer to Trump's inner circle.

House Democrats decried what they called a "pattern of behavior" by congressional Republicans, the White House and "the political leadership of the " to discredit the entire probe and impugn the integrity of the career investigators. Republicans have said the memo alleges Federal Bureau of Investigation misconduct and some have argued that the public should see it.

According to a person familiar with the exchange, Kushner's legal team did not decline an appearance with Senate Judiciary but asked for guidance on when committee members are allowed to disclose information. The committee also received a written response to questions from Veselnistkaya it also intends to release. In lieu of talking to Kushner himself, Grassley noted that both Kushner and Manafort spoke with the Senate Intelligence Committee previous year.

Cornyn said he has been briefed personally by Nunes on the memo, but has not yet read it.
