DeMarcus Cousins OUT for the season: Pelicans star suffers injury against Rockets

Demarcus Cousins

Cousins will undergo an MRI to confirm the diagnosis, but reports say that the organization believes the diagnosis is clear.

The injury, which occurred as Cousins pursued a missed free throw with 12 seconds left in the game, all but squelched the jubilation from a team and its fans, who otherwise would have been celebrating a fourth straight victory.

It's a blow for the recently-selected All Star starter, who's in the midst of a career year, averaging 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game, but will miss the remainder of the season.

"We were starting to play damn good basketball", said head coach Alvin Gentry to ESPN. That's the tough part.

And for Cousins himself, the future suddenly got a lot bleaker. Even putting aside this season, Achilles injuries have been known to be potentially devastating for an athlete's long term outlook and we have no idea if Cousins will be the same elite player whenever he can return.

CBS Orders "Murphy Brown" Revival Starring Candice Bergen
CBS announced on Wednesday that Murphy Brown , its 1988-98 TV newsroom sitcom, was making its return to prime time. CBS set a 2018-19 schedule for the new comedy, but we won't have a firm release date for a few weeks.

While New Orleans will take the win, all eyes will be on the training room as the extent of Cousins' leg injury is assessed.

HORNETS 121, HAWKS 110 • In Charlotte, N.C., Kemba Walker scored 29 points and made two key 3-pointers down the stretch to help Charlotte beat Atlanta. Cousins ran through the lane to try to get the rebound, punched the ball away from the Rockets' Trevor Ariza and jumped near the baseline to save the ball from going out of bounds.

Chris Paul stood out for the Rockets with a season-high 38 points but it was not enough to bring his team back from a 21-point deficit in the third. Everything he's done and what he's tried to do for us and the improvements he's made as a player, on and off the court, has just been great. It was quite shocking, to say the least, and the outpour of support for Cousins continued today when retired Los Angeles Lakers legendary shooting guard Kobe Bryant sent out a heartfelt tweet to the big man. James also had 11 turnovers.

The win improved the Pelicans record to 27-21 on the season. Gentry said Cousins has done so much for the team this season, after coming over last season in a trade. He was also on the verge of his first ever playoff appearance after he and Anthony Davis have been carrying them to a top-eight spot in the West.
