Sessions vows to find missing Federal Bureau of Investigation text messages

Regardless, Trump may have overstated the number of lost messages.

For the past few days, Fox News has been featuring wall-to-wall coverage of an unknown number of text messages between FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI attorney Lisa Page that had disappeared from FBI server records.

In his latest attack on the bureau's credibility, Trump targeted FBI agent Peter Strzok and lawyer Lisa Page, who were in a relationship and criticized Trump and other presidential candidates in texts they exchanged during the 2016 election.

The FBI admitted last week that it had "failed to preserve" text messages from two anti-Trump FBI employees during a five-month period.

He noted during an appearance on a Milwaukee radio show that Strzok appeared to doubt Mueller's probe would uncover any collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

Aside from the system breakdown, Republican lawmakers have seized on the text communications to question the credibility of Mueller's continuing inquiry into possible coordination between Russian Federation and Trump campaign and subsequent obstruction of justice by the president.

The British government announced the following month that one of the hostages was killed, but the three others were freed. Last February, two German archaeologists were abducted in the region, though were later freed.

Thousands of FBI-issued Samsung 5 phones had technical issues that resulted in a failure to store text messages over a period of a year between June 2016 and May 2017, according to a senior Justice Department official. "Blaming Samsung!", the president demanded on Twitter Tuesday evening. Moreover, they have also included discussions of the Clinton email investigation enacted by the FBI.

Late Monday, Sessions said the Justice Department's inspector general already was examining the breakdown, resulting in the loss of text messages transmitted between the two, from December 14, 2016 to May 17, 2017.

Strzok reportedly changed former FBI Director James Comey's speech - in which he said he didn't recommend charges against Clinton - to say Clinton engaged in "extremely careless" behavior rather than "grossly negligent" behavior. "Rather than clearing up prior Federal Bureau of Investigation and DOJ actions, these recently produced documents cause us to further question the credibility and objectivity of certain officials at the Federal Bureau of Investigation". Ron Johnson, the Republican chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, after the Department of Justice delivered about 384 pages containing around 9,000 texts to Congress on Friday.

"No, we have to dig into it", Johnson said.

This is about "corruption at the highest levels of the FBI", Johnson said.

At FBI and DOJ oversight hearings held shortly after the release of the first messages, Republican congressmen took turns criticizing the agencies for having an alleged bias.
