Intel says new patches coming soon for CPU flaws

Earlier this month Intel released a patch for Spectre and Meltdown, the devastating vulnerabilities affecting every modern Intel processor.

Several days ago, Intel disclosed issues surrounding the update for fixing the recent Meltdown and Spectre flaws are actually causing problems on some systems. He goes on to say that an early fix has been distributed to some industry partners for testing and that Intel will "make a final release available once that testing has been completed".

The problem specifically involves PCs and servers on Intel's fifth generation Core Broadwell and fourth-generation Haswell platforms, roughly released starting between 2013 and 2015.

The chip maker began investigating its patch after users reported machines were unexpectedly rebooting after installing the update.

"There was cross-talk", she explained at a congressional hearing, but she didn't "dispute the president was using tough language".

In new guidance, the company states: "We have now identified the root cause for Broadwell and Haswell platforms, and made good progress in developing a solution to address it".

In Monday's announcement, Navin Shenoy, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Data Center Group, called upon OEM device builders, system manufacturers and service providers to "stop deployment of current versions [of the Intel firmware updates], as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior". Regular computer users don't have a lot to worry about, but operations managers at cloud companies and data centers have done little else in 2018 but worry about these security issues and the performance impact of the patches created to mitigate those issues. However, until then, Intel is changing their tune in terms of updating.

In short, while computing device vendors and other Intel partners work with Intel to fix these issues at the top level and hopefully avoid these faulty patches, the firm also asking end users to stay away from the latest processor updates.
