U.S. 101 near reopening after California mudslide

HOPE Animal Assisted Crisis Response visits community members at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse Sunken Garden during a vigil for victims of the Montecito mudslides

Authorities located the body of a 28-year-old Montecito woman who had been missing for almost two weeks on Saturday morning, according to a release from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

U.S. Highway 101 reopened Sunday after a almost two-week closure due to deadly mudslides that caused traffic headaches across the region, state officials said. Officials had previously promised that the highway would be open again in time for the Monday morning commute.

On Saturday the teams found the body of missing 28-year-old Faviola Benitez Calderon, of Montecito.

Still listed as missing were 2-year-old Lydia Sutthithepa and 17-year-old Jack Cantin, officials said.

Traffic began moving again on USA 101 in Santa Barbara County shortly after noon, according to Jim Shivers, spokesman for the California Department of Transportation.

Man Gets 5-Foot Long Tapeworm From Eating Sushi Everyday
A proclaimed salmon sashimi fan in Fresno had a 5 ½ foot-long tapeworm pulled from his body after complaining of diarrhea. Scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found tapeworms in some Pacific salmon.

KEYT-TV reports Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite toured the area Thursday and watched crews clear debris.

At least 21 people died in the mudslides, including Calderon's son, niece and sister-in-law, the California Department of Fire and Forestry Protection said. They will also clean and sweep the highway.

Highway 101, a key north-south route in California, was shut down after it was covered by 12 feet of mud after the deadly mudslide on January 9.

A "hard closure" had been put in place on Santo Tomas Lane, which is east of Olive Mill Road and in an area that was hit hard by the mud and debris flows.
