Police rescue US, Canadian nationals kidnapped along Kaduna road

Gunmen ambushed an American and a Canadian traveling through Nigeria's northern Kaduna state, kidnapping them and killing two policemen, a state police spokesman said Wednesday. He said no ransom was paid.

Two of their police escorts were killed during an exchange of fire with the abductors.

Confirming the development to journalists on Saturday, State Commissioner of Police, Agyole Abeh, said the two foreigners were rescued by the police at Jere area in Kagarko Local Government Area of the state.

Nigerian police have arrested a suspect in connection with the abduction and are pursuing others, he said.

"We rescued the two Americans and two Canadian citizens, three males and one female in fairly good health around 7:30 a.m. today, January 20".

GOP still struggling with Trump's remarks on Africa
"There was cross-talk", she explained at a congressional hearing, but she didn't "dispute the president was using tough language".

In October, kidnappers took four Britons in Delta state in the south.

The four North Americans - whose identities have not been disclosed - were on private business in Kaduna when they were snatched on the road from the town of Kafanchan to the capital Abuja. Last February, two German archaeologists were abducted in the region, though were later freed.

The foreign nationals were members of an investment team for a solar power project in Kafanchan district in Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State Police spokesman Mukhtar Aliyu told CNN.

The British government announced the following month that one of the hostages was killed, but the three others were freed.
