Facebook Users Will Be Able To Rank News Source Trustworthiness

Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks on stage during the annual Facebook F8 developers conference in San Jose California U.S

Facebook has announced that it wants its users to see high-quality news in their feed as it makes changes to make the site more personal to you.

'There's too much sensationalism, misinformation and polarisation in the world today.

"Social media enables people to spread information faster than ever before, and if we don't specifically tackle these problems, then we end up amplifying them", he wrote. This data will help to inform ranking in News Feed.

The company asserts that its own executives will not pick and choose favorites.

By the start of next week, Facebook will allow its users to rank news sources they see as the most credible and trustworthy so it can better rank and prioritize them in its News Feed. Facebook previously appointed ABC News and Snopes, among others, as arbiters of fake news, but it seems that the company will now use a survey of users to determine which news sources are trusted the most. Its trustworthiness is calculated from the ratio of those who trust the source to those who are familiar with it.

The Internet has plenty to say in response to the announcement. Zuckerberg said Friday because of that, news posts will make up 4 percent of the news feed, down from 5 percent today.

Why crude oil prices are on upward swing, by USA energy agency
However, prices stayed below recent three-year highs as fuel supplies remain ample and as refineries scaled back operations. US crude output is expected to soon break 10 million bpd, challenging top producers Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia.

Facebook says the overall effect of this change is that the balance of news you see from sources will be shifted to the content the community deems trustworthy. That does raise some questions, but we guess we'll have to wait and see if Facebook's latest approach will be one that works. Facebook stated, "We'll be working on these efforts for the rest of the year".

The change will affect not only links posted by news outlets but also news stories that individuals share, Facebook said.

"The first changes you'll see will be in News Feed, where you can expect to see more from your friends, family and groups", Mr Zuckerberg said. In 2016, Republican US lawmakers expressed concern that Facebook, based in liberal Northern California, was suppressing news stories of interest to conservative readers.

Facebook said that ranking by trustworthiness was not meant to directly impact any specific groups of publishers based on their size or ideology.

Zuckerberg said he settled on the idea of surveying Facebook users after rejecting having the company itself rank news outlets' trustworthiness.

The effort could have a large effect on news publishers, many of which are already anxious that Facebook has cut their access to Facebook users.
