Syrian Kurdish PYD urges action against Turkish bombing of Afrin - statement

12 mental patients injured in PYD PKK attacks in Syria

Ankara has always stressed the need to expel the YPG from Afrin, who fall under the military wing of the Democratic Unionist Party in Syria, which Ankara regards as a terrorist group because of its association with the Kurdistan Workers' Party.

"I think if the Syrian people could be able to solve alone its problems, it would probably be much better", he said.

Although the United States has also deemed the PKK to be a terrorist organization, it has provided support to the Syrian Kurdish groups in their fight against the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL).

With the planned 30,000-strong border force, which will mostly draw fighters from the SDF, the U.S.is not only institutionalising the militia, but also setting the stage for a prolonged stay in Syria.

Speaking at Stanford University after being introduced by former top diplomat Condoleezza Rice, Tillerson said the Trump administration was determined not to repeat President Barack Obama's "mistake" when he withdrew US troops from Iraq in 2011.

A Turkish military statement said Gen Hulusi Akar and intelligence chief Hakan Fidan would meet with Russia's military chief, Valery Gerasimov, to discuss regional security issues, the latest developments in Syria and ongoing peace efforts for the war-torn country. Russian Federation has criticized the plan as well, saying it could fuel tensions around Afrin.

Why crude oil prices are on upward swing, by USA energy agency
However, prices stayed below recent three-year highs as fuel supplies remain ample and as refineries scaled back operations. US crude output is expected to soon break 10 million bpd, challenging top producers Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia.

Turkey's National Security Council said earlier on Wednesday Turkey would not allow the formation of a "terrorist army" along its borders.

Erdogan said the imminent military operation is to "purge terror" from near its borders. However, the US has supported the YPG as its ally on the ground in combating IS in Syria. Their sphere of influence expanded after they joined forces with the United States to fight Islamic State - although Washington opposes their autonomy plans.

Turkey has sent reinforcements to its border in recent weeks and Erdogan said this week that Turkish troops were already firing artillery at Afrin from the border.

The MGK statement again slammed the U.S. support for the YPG - an ally of Washington in the fight against Islamic State (IS) jihadists - saying it was "regrettable" that a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally had "declared terrorists as a partner".

The United States has about 2,000 troops on the ground in Syria. He noted that Turkey will take all necessary steps against provocative actions of the US. "We expect [them] to reverse the mistake as soon as possible", Akar said.

On Jan. 14, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement that cooperation of the United States with PYD and YPG contradicts Washington's commitments and statements made earlier, and threatens the national security of Turkey.
